    Default Slash Bridge Hurts!

Got a set of Slash pickups in my 2008 LP Standard Faded. Love the sound. Only problem is that the bridge pup, at higher amp volumes when soloing, sounds ice picky on the high notes and hurts the ears. Ouch!..what's the deal?

Marshall Haze 15, 1960 cab, Ibanez 808 engaged..

    Thanks in advance, Tonemasters...

That pretty much describes his tone IMO.

That's when you switch to the neck pickup.

Blueman uses 250k pots on many of his bridge pickups because 500k is to bright and harsh for what he does. I think changing pots, caps, or a combo would help. You could also ride the tone knob.......

Try lowering the treble side of the pickup away from the strings

I tried for months to like them....couldnt get around the brightness. I know a lot of people love them but I
can't think of a bridge pickup I have hated as much as the Slash.

I replaced the Slash set with Blackdogs from Bare Knuckle and now I'm happy.

Use a 300k volume pot, linear taper. That will warm it up. That is if you have 500k in there now.

Any one of the Customs is probably what you're wanting to hear. Trade it.

Man, I was thinking of buying a set for my '60 Reissue. Maybe I'll stick with the non-Slash version of the Alnico II Pros.

If you think his pickups are bright. You should try his amp! It'll cut your head off.

I love it though. I just use lower-mids pickups.

Yeah that's just the Slash sound. I remember making sound clips of 6 different prototypes for him, so we could narrow it down before meeting him in person for the live trials. All through a cranked Marshall of course. I had earplugs fully seated the whole time. I don't know how he does it. (hearing loss helps I'm sure) If it were my guitar I'd use the AII Pro in the bridge and the Slash model in the neck. Best of both worlds IMO.

Ya the afd100 Marshall is one bright amp by itself! The treble will take your head off. Can't imagine the slash a2p's through that amp.

    Frank nailed it.

This thread brought back memories of a rehearsal with some guys I know. An extra guitarist had been drafted in. He flayed a budget Ibanez GRG through a cranked Marshall Valvestate half stack. The treble tone pot was right up and the Contour control was well into its highest frequency range.

I would rather have listened to an angle grinder on steel.

The man has had some.excellent tomes on album, but I have yet to hear any live tone of his that wasnt high mid mud, or nails on chalkboard bright.

I have the APH-2 Bridge. Was massively disappointed with it initially given £80 was a lot of saving up for me back then.

Then I moved it into the neck for sh*ts and giggles. Oh man have I never looked back.

I think it just doesn't cope well in the bridge position, whichever pickup is there.

I agree about some excellent tones captured on certain albums (e.g. Appetite)... but at the same time there are also a lot of ice pick tones ondisplay in the Use Your Illusion albums in particular.

Not sure which amp you mean, but I'm an amp tech, and I can tell you, the linear treble pot on the jubilee heads comes on like a frickin rocket, and if you turn it much past 9 O'clock it is painful.

I remember back in the mid 80s when I first heard GNR, I thought, "wow, what a great rock singer, and the guitarist has a cool old-school thing going, but his tone is the tone I try hard not to get out my Marshalls".

I still think that. About the only time I've heard him produce a tone I like is a thing he did with Lenny Kravitz, and I'm not sure that wasn't Lenny.

You do know there was no Jubilee when Slash did AFD right? That was a moded Super Trem.

Might be but his first "signature amp" was a jubilee copy.

In any case, there is almost as much "lore" out there surrounding his tone on Appetite as there is about Eddie's tone on VH1.

    Cept Eddie's tone didn't suck.

Slash's tone, though I realize some love it, is what happens when you turn up the high end on a Marshall farther than it ought to go. It is gritty, brittle, and thin on the low notes. Not for me at all.
