    Default Television Technology dudes

What is up? I'm coming up on 'buy a new TV for the family room' time. Lot's of changes and such in things since last time I bought. (2005? Digital Light projection slim 61")

I'm looking for something maybe smaller - like 50"

    Whats a good price performer?

    What technology is hip?

What will I kick myself if I don't get?

    Cool brands? Reliable brands?

3d - what's that all about (I could personally care less).

A lot depends on your viewing "style" for lack of a better term. What are you going to watching on it? From how far? Do you play games from an Xbox or PS3? Do you have a Blu Ray? HD cable? There's lots of cool stuff out there. The price has really come down on the big panels.

*EDIT* semi important....Is your TV room well lit, dark, or have a lot of windows?

    3D = glasses = waste of time/money.

You will kick yourself if you get: anything from Wally World.

    Cool brand: Sanyo.

We've been very satisfied without LG LCD.

LED backlots are pretty . They came out after we bought this one.

I believe you'll obtain more useful and reliable information by going to CNET or some other consumer technologies websites rather than getting input from this forum Aceman. There you'll find side-by-side comparison, scientific in-depth look into specific products or technologies, while here you'll just waste your time on reading superficial information based on unreliable personal experience.

CNET is a great resource, but it's also hardcore nerd. If you can stand endless gushing and rants from people who'll just dweeb-dweeb-dweeb-dweeb-dweeb-dweeb incessantly and who probably don't actually watch TV, you can't go wrong. Make it your home age. Put a link on your desktop. Make the entire site available offline. But don't come crawling back here when you realize you can't play nerdball with truly devoted eDorks.

CNET is useful. So is THIS forum. Your disdain for the forum is misguided.

The forum brethren taught me A LOT when I was researching before buying our current idiot box.

Of course I wasnt in a hurry. I casually reviewed for about six months, then did a more careful search for another 6 months before purchasing.

Dr. Bob: the specs I wanted WERE NOT available in any local stores. I ordered from tigerdirect.com. Wallyworld still doesn't have 240Hz refresh rate for LCD and it has been 2.5 years since I ordered ours. Last I checked, neither did bestbuy. Now if my lousy DSL could keep up with the tv speed. FPS games seem like you're in the game.

My priorities are picture update rate and the richness of the blacks within the image.

With the increasing overlap between television and home computing technology, try to maximise the connectivity between all of your systems.

Dammit, he's worked out our secret ... that this entire site is all lies and invented experiences, that none of us ever tell our true experiences, because .... well .... we just don't. Certainly not since Seymour himself outlawed truth-telling on this forum, at which time the three truth-tellers that had been lurking here and causing trouble were outed and permanently banned.

And i must say since we've all been posting nothing but BS about every single subject, life has been so much better for us. Almost to a man (and woman), this forum has caused us all to have the wrong guitar for what we do, with the wrong pickups, played through superbly inappropriate pedals into entirely the wrong amps for our applications.

If it wasn't for this forum and the wonderful advice i've recieved over the years, i would have never become a succesful jazz guitarist using a l/h Precision bass with Invader pickups through a 200 watt Marshall Major head and a pair of plastic computer monitors, and i would never have married a horse and had the contented life i now enjoy as a successful and respected musician and husband.

You are missing the point. Forget CNET. My point is Aceman will get more valuable information by drawing info from relevant sources. This forum isn't about TV, but pickups and guitars. It doesn't take a research to claim that most users here can't go beyond superficial information on TV tech. Wait for a few days and single out how many posts that are actually 'valid', 'reliable', and 'sufficient', information wise.

I didn't say this forum is all bull****. It only exists in your head. This thread is about TV, not pickups so I believe this forum isn't the right place to search for reliable info. FYI, I am shopping for a digital piano but I am not looking for info from this forum.

My friend has a nicer 3D TV (forget what brand), I would say right now 3D TVs are'nt worth it because only DVD/Blue-Ray movies and sports have 3D features. Once more choices come then maybe it would be cool to have. It is REALLY cool watching a boxing match and seeing someone getting blasted in the face in 3D slow-motion! The sweat/spit from the dudes face looks like it's going to land on you.

, and we're so single-minded we can't possibly know anything useful about anything except pickups.

A survey of all my friends and family sez Vizio rocks. Reliable, quality.

all the refresh rate Hz and numbers and metrics are super boring

The best thing you can do is buy it like a guitar - go to the store, try them all, and buy the one you like the most.

See my previous post regarding available specs. It's similar to wanting to buy a Zion guitar. It's hard to find the better specs for an in store comparison.

Then again you could buy just any old Vizio just because Hunter's friends like them

Actually, it was in this forum that I initially discovered that two manufacturers make all LCD screens. I figured I might as well buy from the folks who make them.
