It's a troll math problem thingy. Two different answers depending on your approach. Order of operations gives you 2.

Nah breh, it's definitely 288. Multiplication and division are equal in PEMDAS. It's straight across left to right after you clear the parentheses.

    2. Simple algebra. You treat the "(9+3)" as if it were in a formula "2X(9+3)", ie "18X + 6X". In this case, X = 1, so you get 18+6=24. "My Dear Aunt Sally": Multiply and Divide before you Add and Subtract. Parentheses are the priority.

When I first did it, I made up my own damn problem by setting it up as 48 / ((2(9+3)) which of course brings up an answer of 2. That extra "(" makes all the difference and in this case it tripped me up for a second.

I kinda forget that I need to rewrite it as 24 (9+3) and then simplify it as 216 + 72.

    Nope.

    48/2*(9+3)=
    48/2*(12)=
    48/2*12=
    24*12=288

Not really. In that thinking, it would be 48 X 1/2(9+3). But yes, it is primary math.

    I'm afraid not. 48/2(9+3) = 48/2(12) = 48/24 = 2

For what it's worth, I just checked and the Python, Ruby, Perl, php and Javascript interpreters all use operator precedence that results in 48 / 2 * (9 + 3) == 288.

I can see where the discrepancy lies, and it's probably a result of the computer age, where there's no clear divisor. So, I'll give you that it COULD be 288, but the elder generation of dinosaurs on here (that would be me) read it differently. However, to be accurate, that method of thinking should be written as (48/2)(9+3).

The only time you multiply/divide into the numbers in the parentheses is when you're trying to cancel out other numbers on the other side of the equals sign.

Since it's a straight line problem, there's no reason to do that. You're not trying to find X, Y, Z, etc...

Hmm; Terminology via the keyboard. I was presuming 2(9+3) was a way of writing 9+3 divided by 2. I never learnt maths on a keyboard. It was all pen and paper, log tables and slide rules when I did. I 've adapted.

That's not true. The way this is written is stating that the "2(9+3)" is the divisor. And I'm done arguing on this.
