As I posted earlier, there's a HUGE difference between 48 / 2 (9+3) and 48 / ((2(9+3)). You can't just make up where you put the "("s in. In this instance, I believe Agileguy is correct.

I understand people wanting to take the equation and make it ((48) x (1/24)), but I think we need to look at this equation as 48 x (1/2) x 12.

Granted it's been years since I was in college and while I don't have a degree, I did get 2 Advanced Calculus Credits from UConn. Kudos to Agileguy for a good one!

Not me, I've got exams and papers due this coming week and already went out yesterday and the day before. I'm knee deep in some maths, statistics and microeconomics stuff right now.

The deal with this equation is that it divides the old school and new school of mathematics. PEMDAS

I could be wrong....I'm no math genius, but if you ask this question of straight A math students from now and 30 years ago, you'll get 288 or 2.

Well, I respect your education, but you're incorrect, sir. The original equation with the former, "48 / 2(9+3)" is what was presented. And this is where the PEMDAS circuitry fails. Everything must be squared above and below the divisor sign ("/") prior to anything else taking place. This is the conventional method of mathematics. And this equation isn't even beginning Calculus, so leave that out of the formula, please. This is basic mathematics. And I'm starting to feel that our status as intelligent human beings is being threatened.

    Found this earlier:

    Implied Multiplication

However, the answer 2 could be justified by the principle of implied multiplication. For example, consider the problem "2/5x."

If one strictly follows the standard order of operations, the correct interpretation would be “(2/5)*(x).”

But many calculators and textbooks state that a higher value of precedence should be placed on implied multiplication than on explicit multiplication:

Because “5x” is implied to be "5*x," it gets higher priority than "2/5." In this case, "2/5x" would be interpreted as "(2)/(5*x)."

Returning to the original problem, if one utilizes the principles of implied multiplication, then “2(9+3)” gets higher precedence than the explicit “48/2,” and would be solved like this:

    48 ÷ 2(9+3)=
    48 ÷ 2(12)=
    48 ÷ 24=
    2
Makes sense to me. But this arguement will never end. It's not supposed to.

And now... This thread has been a total success.

And this added whitespace demonstrates perfectly why this is a troll question. You're assigning the implicit multiplication operator higher precedence than the division operator. You're effectively doing 48 / (2 * (9+3)).

Whether this is correct is a matter of debate. According to the most reliable sources I could find at this point, standard order gives them both the same precedence and requires them to be processed left-to-right.

I can see why one might use the implied multiplication notation - it could give you two different preferences for multiplication based on the way you write the formula. While that could lead to more compact formulas, I don't like it as it leads to this sort of ambiguity.

Do it on any digital device now, and you'll get 288.

Other than that, I don't believe in nerd glasses or math on a Saturday night. WTF is wrong with you people??? lol

Well, I've just gotten back from a wedding/party and I'm winding down. Should I be out drinking until dawn?

Seems like most people over the age of 40 don't understand the concept of trolling the way younger people do.

The question itself, as stated, suffers from a lack of clarity. Therefore all subsequent discussions are invalid.

And the world is better the less of it there is. The base concept of trolling is to break down the implicit contracts that make up a civil and tenable society.
