The DD has good clarity. It's more aggressive with a high-pitched scream to it.
The DC has more "singing" qualities and no particular peaks you'd notice. It needs a pretty massive guitar to drive it, IMHO.
I recommend that anybody with your music preferences should try a DD at least once.

DD, but put the mag from the DD into a Custom and you've got a fair fight.
I'd put my money on the COC.
After reading another thread, I'm intrigued by a Custom/DD hybrid
I'm assuming it would sound virtually identical to a Custom/JB hybrid (?)
how does the custom with the oversized magnet sound in comparison to the DD?

Kinda like a cross between a regular custom, a SuperD, and a Dirty Fingers. It's way chunkier and less peaky than the DD is, kinda grindy, and huge chuggs for the junn-junns.
Leads and cleans are a bit stiff (no worse than the DD or stock Custom, but not as sweet as the C8), but for metallic rhythms it's one of the best.

Is the bottom end still tight and percussive? I cant stand loose bottom end in pickups. And im assuming what you mean by "less peaky" is the sizzle up top on the DD? If that's the case then i may be in to try that.
The C8 and the distortion are my two favorite bridge pickups ever. I wish I could take the custom 8 and its sweet high end and midrange and make it shred like the DD. that would be my perfect pup. Or take the DD and remove the sizzle and make it sing with that warm buttery goodness of the C8

Yes, it's plenty tight on the lows.
