If you wanna support the small guy, check out BG-Pups.com. Every pickup is wound personally by Bryan Gunsher. This guy knows tone inside and out. I'd seriously put him up against Fralin and Lollar. Tell him what you want and what you have and he'll give you exactly what you ask for.

True, but Bryan's humbuckers cost $76.

Not saying a 498 is a bad pup. But at the end of the day, I'll always find something more suiting my ears than that.

It's a perfectly decent sound for a lot of things. But SD and DM make things that are more metal, classic, modern, middy, bassy, jazzy, bluesy, treble, articulalte - you name it.

But more power to you if that's what you dig. Like i say - too much hate. I understand the lack of love.
I doubt they went out of their way to find something that sounds like a 498 but they both may have ended up somewhere close to there with one model or another.

    Gee...maybe it's a good ****ing pup?

i know that's a pretty heavy statement to make and a bunch of dudes that love Teles and shredsticks are gona argue with me, but they're wrong.
anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

Sure. For about 2x the price of what Bryan will do.

I'm definitely a fan of the 490R and T set. Pretty gnarly tones in my SG, but not over the top. Never tried a 498, though. The 500T was awesome as well, it just didn't blend well with my modded 496R. With the A5 in the 496, and the stock 500, the neck pickup ended up being the brighter and more wiry pickup. But I'd love to put a 500 in a single humbucker guitar.

    My official statement:

The 490/498 are ok. They are decent pups for just about anything. No reason to hate. However, there is probably something better for anything you want to do. As always, your ears and guitar may vary.

Problem is them being polar opposites EQ-wise. Dial your amp's EQ to the bridge, and the neck is mud. Dial in the neck, and you could cut glass with the bridge. Good PU's on their own, but they certainly qualify as the odd couple. It frustrates a number of players; they end up using one PU all night. I've gotten a couple used pairs (from unhappy Gibson owners) and with mag swaps (A8 in the 498T and A5 in the 490R) you can get Gibson's take on the C8/'59N, but with a less bassy neck PU. UOA5's are also good, in both the 498T and 490R; fills in the bridge and adds some bite to the neck.

Only the ones with ears for tone have reasons to hate...

    Tone is subjective.

498T, the Rodney Dangerfield of pickups.
