Default does a tele and LP style 2 way exist ?

so I do allot of PU changes in our set . some have to be flicked in a split second and occasionally I mess it up and end up in the middle position.whenever I'm doing this I'm going from a clean amp channel to a heavy chugg distortion amp channel, so its super noticable when I screw it up .

I never use the middle position. I googled and couldnt find any but has anyone ever seen a 2 way switch both in tele and LP style with no middle position ?

You could use a 3-way (couldn't we all) and wire the middle position to be the same as one of the other two.

No, you'd need another type of switch. The LP type 3 way connects both inputs (in parallel) in the middle position.

I'd just flick harder for the LP. The middle position on those switches is extremely easy to ignore. Or if you miss it, just bring the guitar up and fix it with your teeth or your tongue as you play. Turn a mistake into bonus rock god points!

For the Tele, the positions are a bit more positive/stiff, so I can see accidentally getting hung up in the middle. (Though I cannot say that I have. I usually get hung up in the bridge position because the switch tip sits so close to the volume knob that I miss the switch sometimes.)

This might sound weird in response to a request for fewer switch positions, but you could try installing a 5-way in the Tele. I say that for two reasons: 1) Because I find that they are generally a little looser than 3-ways. The middle position is actually the hardest one to land on IME. I often get a notch position when I intended to get the middle. (I have actually installed 3-way switches in two of my Strats to get around this.) 2) You could wire it so that positions 1 and 2 are the same, and 4 and 5 are the same. (I think you'd have to bend those little connection tabs from the middle position to the blade out of the way to do it.) That way even if you mess up and don't get the switch all the way to the other end, you are likely to land on one of the notch positions and get what you intended anyhow. And you'd get a kill switch in the middle position.

I am also thinking that maybe on the Tele switch there is a way to file down the notch on the little wheel inside the switch, so there is no detent in the middle position. Along that same line of thought, have you tried the Tele switch without a spring?

^ +1. Except that to get the most effective kill switch, you'd want it to ground out the pups not just disconnect them from the circuit.

OK, probably better to not have one of the switch positions be a kill switch anyhow now that I think about it.

So maybe he could wire 1, 2, and 3 to select the bridge pickup, and 4 and 5 to be the neck pickup. I don't have a 5-way in front of me, but he could probably do it by bending the tabs connecting the middle position to the blade out of the way for position 4, but leaving them put for position 2. Then a jumper connecting 1, 2, and 3, and another jumper connecting 4 and 5.

Is this a Gibson-style 3-way? If so, why not just replace it with a standard DPDT on-on switch? It won't have the colored plastic cap, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

You could wire the pups to a push / pull pot.

You can wire the pups to a volume knob and just turn it to 0 for one pup and 10 for the other. That way if you miss, you will be damn close to only 1 pup. :-)

all good things to think about thanks.

yeah its more on he tele than the Lp style switch. up down is easier to bash than side to side . the Lp style was more while I'm at it I may as well do it too.

when I wasnt running a tone pot on the tele I swapped the tele style switch for a lp style 3 way in the tone pot hole on the control plate and it worked really well

I may just buy a blank control plate and drill 3 hoels in it to use that style again

or like Artie said a DPDT should work yeah ?

If it's the angle of the switch, Rutters makes a modified Tele control plate. A bit pricey at $30 plus shipping, but it looks pretty cool. He moves the hole for the volume pot back a bit, and angles the slot for the switch. http://app4.websitetonight.com/proje...trolPlate1.jpg.

^ +1. That works very well. It's easy to hit the three way without getting tangled up in the volume control.

Actually, if you're just doing a simple "neck or bridge" selection, a SPDT will do the job.
