p90 for classic rock / hard rock

So I bought an SE one so I could finally have a p90 guitar, been wanting one for a while
But it doesn't have a p90 in it right now, so
I gotta figure out the best p90 to put in it. I use a Custom Custom / 59N (a2 mag) in my washburn (Les paul copy, mahogany, maple cap) and it fits really well with the kind of stuff I do
Thinking a different flavor of the same kind of sound
maybe a little of the rudeness I hear about p90s having, but still a round sound. Crap, dont really know what I want do I?

What says you? I would really prefer not to spend a lot on it (used duncan or similar prices)
any ideas?

The SD Antiquity P-90 goes well on the SE One. The S-P90-3 Custom will rock harder. (I use an S-P90-3n in the bridge position of my Gibson LP Junior Special.)

If you want to get "humbucker" heavy, consider the SD Custom Shop JB90. These are expensive new. I found one pre-owned.

Forum member Wattage had great fun with a Gretsch Filter'Tron copy pickup. I stole his idea by using a TV Jones Classic. Sounded cool in a Malcolm Young way but, eventually, I reverted to the SD Ant.

I'd suggest a Lollar P90 I don't think the stock PRS SE pickups are that different in quality to a Dimarzio/Duncan P90 but that's just my opinion and YMMV.

Fralins and Antiquities are also nice. Any of those P90's will slay the stock P90 and you will get the tone you desire.

+1. I have both, and they're great. Duncan's SP90-2's and SP90-3's have ceramic mags, which I just don't think belong in P-90's (I swapped mags in mine and put in alnicos).

and surprisingly PRS guitars including the SE models come with pretty good stock pickups. I actually had to buy Fralins/Lollars to get a noticeably better tone than the stock pickups.

I hate that Duncans and DiMarzios have ceramic mags, I too would swap to AlNiCo mags.

I like the Lollar in my SG Jr. Nice and snarly. I run it with 500k pots. It's a custom order that I asked to have tapped. Jason nailed what I was going for.

are you saying that your guitar is currently humbucker equipped or rather that you bought a standard P90 routed guitar that does not have pickups in it ?

if you are looking for an inexpensive humbucker-sized P90 - GFS Mean 90.

if you are looking for a full sized P90 - Gibson.

The PRS SE One comes routed for a soapbar P-90 with space for a single control pot under the scratchplate and a jack socket on the edge.

I mentioned the Seymour Duncan JB90 pickup as a way to get a high output sound without the need to modify the pickup cavity. DiMarzio also makes a selection of humbucking pickups in soapbar dimensions.

The stock MIK PRS SE P-90 pickup is not terrible but changing to an American pickup brings a goodly percentage improvement in tone and dynamic response.

On my own PRS SE One, I changed to a push-pull pot. The out position engages a preset treble roll off for instant "woman tone".

SD Custom Shop makes a soapbar that sounds like a JB, hell in actuality if you wanna drop the cash on one the custom shop can make you a soapbar that will do whatever your heart desires.

the stock pickups in that PRS are better than both of those options (Gibson P90 pickups haven't been that great in about 50-60 years), I have owned and played many PRS SE guitars and I know this from firsthand experience.

Go for a boutique P90 if you want to notice a difference or keep the pickup you have in it. Honestly anything else is throwing cash down the drain.

SD Custom Shop makes a soapbar that sounds like a JB.

It would be fairer to describe the JB90 as a JB style humbucker that looks like a Soapbar. The two coils are arranged side by side rather than stacked vertically. The bobbins are, of necessity, slightly narrower than a regular 'bucker. The polepiece screws emerge towards one edge of the plastic cover rather than along the centre line.

This is wattage guitar. I am going to try the tron first, but I got this specifically to try out p90s.
I do not have the stock p90 that came with it.

so if going SD is mag swapping going to make things better? or just different. p90s are a whole new animal to me.

BKP Supermassive is a one hell of a pickup. It can do anything from jazz to modern metal easily.

If you can find a PRS SE P90 for it, get one. I've had at least 4 kinds of P90s and the PRS SE P90 is the best of the bunch. Including Duncans.
