Default Need help on pickup choice...

    Hey everyone,

I've been working on a strat project for a while now. I took a Rocker Music Tools RG-100 (black strat copy), and stripped down the paint to find it was basswood. It was quite a surprise to me. Anyways, I refinished it and now need some pickup options. I want a single bridge humbucker that is good for cleans (jazzy), blues, rock, and some more classic metal (think Maiden), and some punk (like Rise Against). I was really interested in the Custom, Custom 5, and Custom Custom. What are the differences between these? Any other pickups you'd suggest? They don't have to be Duncans, as long as they're passive. If you guys want, I'll also post some pictures when it's done.

    Welcome to the forum.

The three SD humbuckers on your list are all optimised for high gain valve amplification and/or distortion pedal users. I suggest something a little less rippy such as the Screamin' Demon or the Pearly Gates.

For what you describe I think a 59/Custom would probably be the ideal bridge pickup you get the juice of the custom for the heavier stuff but the dynamic, airy qualities of the 59 that make it great for jazz and blues.

Thanks you guys! I looked into all 3 of the suggestions, and I think I'm gonna go with the 59/Custom, unless someone else convinces me otherwise.

I play all of the above mentioned styles (excluding Maiden, though I play some stuff that's a lot heavier than that) and I love the 59/Custom in the bridge of a basswood guitar.
Every love that made me lose my reasoning. Every chord that made my conscience ache. Every day spent counting hours. Well, none of them comes close to singing back a song inside my head.

    I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans, and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief.

For Maiden you can't deny the Super Distortion. Just ask Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers!!!

I'm almost positive that the 59/Custom is gonna be MY pickup. It sounds like a beast. I'll keep looking, but I'm so tempted to just get the hybrid.

The Super Distortion is a great choice for Maiden since it was a widely used pickup by the boys. The 59/Custom Hybrid is an awesome pickup for earlier Maiden tones as well though. I'd be going the 59/Custom Hybrid.
