I just about lost it when I saw this. A friend showed me this video just a couple days ago.

I've seen that!
At first, I was like "yeesh, just what the world needs, another white guy slapping the top of an open tuned guitar," but then I divided by the gee-whiz novelty of the white guy tapping the top of an open tuned guitar (which, it's important to note that I hate), and realized that it's a good groove and the song is compositionally interesting and arranged well.
TL;DR - good song

This is a thought-provoking statement. It asserts that the only value of that technique is in novelty.
I'll admit my first complete thought was "yeesh, another player using a thick pick, low action and humbuckers through a marshall-type circuit with too much gain and low end."

I posted about this last year.
I think he's ****ing awesome and that's a really great song.
Every love that made me lose my reasoning. Every chord that made my conscience ache. Every day spent counting hours. Well, none of them comes close to singing back a song inside my head.
I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans, and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief.
