Just to fuel the fire, here's mine:

I bought it new, and I'm happy to say that it was well worth the price tag. I have no regrets.

I also have a MIM P-Bass, and after a couple hours on the P, switching to the Stingray feels like stepping out of a Toyota and into a Porche. I've never actually driven a Porche, but I think you know what I mean. The Stingray just plays itself. The neck feels amazing and the 5-way switch with 3-band EQ gets me more sounds than I know what to do with.

Bottom line, I say save up for the real deal.

As you say, the Stingray just plays itself. I'm not worried about getting "certain sounds", because somehow that bass just gives me everything I want in sound, playability, and style. There are no barriers between myself as a player and the response I get from the instrument.

Cheapest I find new Stingray 5's for is $1700.... I'm hesitant to buy used, want to have my hands on it first, though I'd hope that Musicman has stringent consistency standards.

I've only bought one guitar sight-unseen, an eBay Taylor 310 for about the same price as a new Stingray 5, which worked out wonderfully... but this was about 8 years ago, and I don't spend willy-nilly on music equipment these days like I wish I could.

Sabbath, with the 5-way switch and the four knobs, how do you know what control to adjust?? I mean, the Classics have just two knobs and no switch... are you still able to "set it and forget it"?

I tried to find a pic of some P.O.S. Civic or something painted like the old blue/grey Stingray 'Vette's but couldn't.

Well let's not get too hyper. They are top quality and play well.

However, it's just one style of bass, a "modern" one with a real humbucker and fancy electronics.

You will get neither the growl of a classic Precision bass nor the quick finger following of the Jazz bass'es single coils out of it.

Just coming out is the new SUB line from EB. Even cheaper than the Sterling line, and probably better quality than the old OLP line.

This 20th Anniversary Stingray just got listed on the local Craigslist (Orange County, CA). I know it's over $1,000, but I've never seen this nice of a Stingray before. The quilted body, headstock, and neck all scream top class. Plus, it's a limited edition so it will probably retain its value well.
