Board cut in half and the preamp section replaced with this monstrosity.

Another area repair shop sent this to me to sort out; they already removed the "extra" tube and tried to rewire it but it didn't work. It belongs to a backline rental company. I'll have to make a new board to replace the missing portion. I'll be returning it to stock...at least from a function standpoint.

The mod was fairly recent (2001) based on the cap dates.

I don't know what people are thinking when they do stuff like this. At some point you have to realize that buying another amp is a better idea.

Some people are mod happy...both owners and techs. You can't turn a Ford Focus into a Ferrari...and you can't fit all your groceries in a Ferrari.

I have no idea...it was non-functional when I got it.

According to the backline Co that owns it (info passed along to me indirectly), it was never very impressive.

Gigged with my beloved JMP 2104 on Saturday and it's perfect for what I do. If I want more gain I'm with the 99.9% - hit it with a pedal.

A friend of mine actually has a Blue Voodoo 300 head (yes, insane at 300 watts), but the 6550 compliment, large transformers, and Eminence loaded cab actually sound (gasp) good?! There is a possibilty the BV300, if it were anyone's cell mate, would have its way with them.

I am with you on the old Blue Voodoo heads sounding harsh though, I really think that poor speaker choice had a lot to do with that. Quality speakers (say some Celestion Classic Lead 80s and Vintage 30s in tandem) improve the sound appreciably.

All the same, modding a Marshall is not to be taken lightly. Modding a Marshall incorrectly should be a punishable offense.

When I look at these images, I get the same revulsion as when I see pics of the poor les pauls that were mutilated in the '80s to "improve" them by adding a floyd, a top horn cutaway, weight-relief holes made with hand-drills...etc...

I'm like Firebird: if it doesn't suit you sell it and get something else...

I beg to differ but that all depends on what you are wanting to use the amp for.

I much prefer the lee Jackson & bogner & soldano modded 800s to the stock ones for thrash by far

An 800 is too toppy sounding unless you snip that dreaded .001 cap off the preamp control...Plus I always found my own 800 to be thin and compressed sounding until you wound it up past 3/4 or so on the volume...

With the NMV series,I've not found this to be an issue...One side of my own JMP head is almost Fender BF clean(warm and not so ice picky in the highs)

I'm a classic rock/blues guy and so the NMV earlier series Marshalls fit my styles better....Not to say that I don't also love alot of the 80s 800 tones..

I also don't play with alot of gain...Something a bit gainier than a stock Plexi tone.....works..
