You really shouldnt need much if any gain in an OD pedal. Turning the level all the way up with the gain on zero should be plenty enough to get the gain channel of any amp into a metal type saturation. If you want the pedal to do most or all of the work, then a distortion pedal is the way to go.

For $40 you can do better then the OS-2 look for the digitech bad monkey or SD-1 second hand they should come up around that and be much better although not as much gain but you could probably mod the SD-1 to have more gain. The OS-2 is like a bad version of a sd-1 and ds-1 with a mix knob but not as good as either.

I have the Digitech Hardwire CM-2 OD pedal. It has plenty of gain, especially on the Modified setting. They can be had on Ebay for 50-60 bucks.

If you really want a mean OD tone, in a good way . . . you have to look at the T-Rex Mudhoney II.

Set one side for an OD, and the other half as a boost . . . or . . . set the one half as a mild OD and the other half on a complete OTT OD

Get a MXR Classic OD on the cheap, if that doesn't give you the jump you want open the sucker up, flip the switch and now you have the ZW OD.....
