Default My home theater sub just bit the big one.

Well the driver anyway. Amp is still working fine though. Was watching a movie and all was good. Then a little bit of rattle. Didn't think much about it. Could have been port rattle. Then BAM! Rattle Rattle Rattle! Son Of A EXPLETIVE! Looks like I'll be calling Klipsch in the morning....again. My other sub of the same model blows a fuse every time you put a new one in and powered up.

Needless to say, I won't be buying anymore Klipsch subwoofers. I don't know if I'm going to try and find a replacement driver for this one or just build a passive sub and use a stand alone amp.

Been looking around at Parts Express and they have a big selection of stuff to choose from. I just wish their site wasn't so dam slow.

I do think it would be cool to go DIY for an entire home theater setup though!

What is it? I have a 100 watt 12" Klipsh Sub Driver laying about collecting dust.
Question..can bad juice from the amp cause the driver to blow out?

It's a 10" driver. I'm having a hard time finding any specifics on it other than that and that it's an 8 ohm driver. It sounds like the voice coil or something in it has come loose. It's possible that the cone is hitting the frame as well. I've seen that happen in some guitar drivers before, but they've never made that much racket.

Running too much or too little power to a driver can damage a speaker depending on the speaker. I don't think that would be the case here since the power amp is mostly tailored to the driver or vice versa in home theater subs.

I have a 10" Klipsch sub. The amp failed while under warranty and it was replaced locally. Aside from that, it's been flawless and sounds great.

Drivers in powered subwoofers don't break frequently. If the amplifier is at fault, it's likely to be DC or some other catastrophically wrong signal that was never meant to reach the driver. DC at high levels will bake a voicecoil very quickly.

More likely, something physically came apart in the driver. A surround, spider, or lead-in wire coming loose or unglued, could be at fault.

Two-piece subs with a separate amp are a really good idea. That way, if one part breaks, you have more options for getting yourself up and running again.

And if you do go the full DYI route, good luck with the surround processor, I guess.

This one is still under warranty. Or at least it should be. Both subs were purchased at the same time around 3 years ago. I think they have a 5 year warranty. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they'll do. Klipsch's headquarters is in Indianapolis now and that's around a 2 hour drive from here.

After doing a little bit of reading looking for specs, it turns out the Synergy Sub10 models had a lot of problems with them. Which could be why they discontinued them. After having 2 of the same subs fail for different things, I'm probably just going to have them repaired and sell them off and get something new.

I'd only go DIY with the speakers. I'd still stick with a receiver or pre/pro setup for processing. I'm not nearly brave enough to tackle something like that.

After doing quite a bit of looking around, I'm heavily leaning towards going with a stand alone passive and power amp setup. I might get a little fancy and do a dual 10" with a 12" setup.

    I have a 30" flatscreen tube TV
I have a littel 100 highend high current watt Amp on my TV,thatI run into my Powred Sub , and a couple of efficinet bookshelf speakers
I took two old vintage small 1960's brassUniversity horns w/ crossovers , and wired them up to a small inifinity speaker system, wiht the tweerte disegaged.
So I get all the Metal midrange sounds of the 'Clank' of the swords clashing and stuff, and also the crssp metallic highs of coins and keys and then all the thunder and boom from the sub, and get the mids from the midbass of the Infinitys

These are front left right towers.

    This is my center channel.

My TV is an LG 47" LCD that's about 3 years old now. It's 120Hz, but it still looks pretty dam good to me.

If you're going to replace it outright, check out SVS subs. They're pretty decent subs for the money . . .

Put shakers in your sofa. No more sub=kinder to neighbors! LOL

Parts Express is the best. You live in Indiana? Drive there next weekend. They're having a giant outdoor event like Sweetwater's Gearfest. It should be awesome. I can't make it I'll be at NAMM. So close yet so far...
