    Default What guitar is this?

My friend is selling it along with an hohner acoustic and an Encore guitar for £60 and this is what caught my eye.

although right handed I was going to buy and resell but it depends on how much this is worth and WTF it is???

Those are hex screw pickups as well I think

EDIT: forgot to say it is a WASHBURN if that helps

    Eighties model. M something.

Pickups probably not stock/original. (Back in the day, pickups came in any colour you liked so long as it was black.)

Bruce. PM coming your way on another topic.

That's about $100 for all three guitars!

    Nice score

OP guitar probably the original Mercury series. (The second series had a revised, rather squat, body shape and the fingerboard inlays were offset between the E and A strings.) Yet another basswood shredstick.

    Need to clarify.
    1) Is the vendor offering all three guitars for sixty quid or just the Hohner and Encore? (The Washburn being offered separately.)
    2) What make/model are the pickups supposed to be? (This will affect the valuation.)

    1) all three for £60
    2) as far as I can make out they are pickups made by Josi Warman of Warman guitars, he's been going for 30 years or something... not worth huge amounts but bloody good pickups. I'll try and find out more.

I suggest offering sixty quid for just the guitar that you want. This avoids the need to store or resell the other two.

    why you say that?

I thought hohners were pretty good.

that encore would be dead to me really.

The question that you have to ask yourself is this. Why is the vendor willing to sell these instruments so cheaply?

    A few possible answers;
    1) He is too lazy to advertise the guitars.
    2) He has tried advertising. Nothing sold.
    3) The guitars are crap.
    4) The guitars are stolen.
    5) Your friend needs cash in a BIG hurry. (Rarely a good sign.)

Okay. Now, do some arithmetic. Calculate how much it would cost you to advertise the guitars in Ad Trader type newspapers or to auction on eBay. Set prices to cover those costs plus a profit margin. Then, imagine whether you would pay that much for any of these instruments?

The Encore is probably the sort of Dogbreath electric guitar that sells between acquaintances for peanuts.

The Hohner acoustic is the sort of student bedroom strummer that spends most of its time attracting dust.

The Washburn has potential as the basis of a project. This is the only one that might rake in a decent profit. It could even be traded for something.
