Default Fitting chrome covers to humbuckers

    Hey,

I've just fitted a new gotoh humbucker Tele bridge and want to put a JB with a chrome cover on.

I already have the JB. And seeing as the humbucker fits in the bridge plate I'm guessing I need to raise it up with some foam/sponge and screw it into the cavity?

If I put a chrome cover on it will I need a pickup ring? Do I need to put wax on the humbucker or ground the cover?

    Thanks

To me, the expression "humbucker Tele bridge" suggests an oversized, modern T style bridge with a rectangular HB hole through it and two small screw holes rather than a single coil cut-out and three larger screw holes.

Do you actually mean what Fender would call a fixed (hard tail) bridge for Stratocaster? The same item would have appeared on CBS-era Tele Deluxe guitars.

The former requires no pickup surround. The latter very definitely does.

It's always a good idea to ground the pup cover to the baseplate. With a JB it's also a good idea to get some wax under that cover to prevent squeeling/microphonics.

    Hi there,

How would I go about putting wax on? Is it a case of dipping the top/bobbins in some hot wax then pushing the chrome cover on?

Melt some parafin wax (same as used in canning) in a small can in boiling water, like a double boiler, or use a hairdryer. immerse the pup in it for 15-20 seconds to pot the pup. put the cover on, screw the poles down below the holes, put masking tape over the holes, dip the pup once more for a couple seconds, turn upside down and let excess wax drain out for a couple seconds, then place on paper towel cover side down. Let the wax cool down, remove tape, wipe off excess wax, screw out the poles, and install in guitar.

Very simple proceedure, but don't let the wax get hotter than about 140 - 150 degrees...it can ignite.
