That term is the most descriptive of the symptoms that result in the diagnosis. All of the PC terms used to replace it are either misleading or downright incorrect.

The current La. term is "mental disabilities". That suggests that you had an ability and lost it. This is inaccurate. The fact is that for whatever reason, the persons development was delayed, or retarded.

Changing diagnostic terminology simply because people use it as an insult is a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction.
