I've been reading the series too. I read the first three books and then took a 2 week break and am now starting the 4th book. There are some good moments along the way, but I agree that I yearn for more epic stuff. There is so much to keep up with in those books that such a slow buildup makes it a slow read.

I'm with you Ad. I gave up on the series for two reasons. 1 - I got fed up with children being killed, or adults being graphically killed for no apparent reason other than to make the story seem "dark" and "edgy" and 2 - it was so slow. The guy takes ten pages to describe something most other authors would do in a page.

I'll just watch the DVDs. At least the chicks are super hot (and Lena Headey is in DREDD 3D, get your backsides down to a cinema to watch it in September!)

Na, the dragon chick known as Khaleesi on the series is super hot. You should go back and see the hot tub scene on the first episode of season 1 (book 1). There are plenty of nude scenes in the TV series but, unfortunately, they also have an equal amount of male nude scenes. I guess they do that to keep female viewers interested.

I did say the chicks were super hot.

I would say Lena Headey is at least as hot as the Khaleesi girl though.

I'm not surprised, it would have taken me five years to read it it's so padded. The guy must have been getting paid by the word.

If he does the same thing Robert "three pages to describe a single room" Jordan did (that is, die before finishing the series), you could use the collective nerd rage to restart the Sun.

Or kickstart cold fusion. Take your pick.

Yeah I know because I quoted you, but I don't agree that Lena Heady is as hot. Lena is a beautiful woman, but she's too skinny for my tastes while Khaleesi is filled in just a little more and has a nice young natural look. She's not the typical breast-implanted, skinny to the bones Hollywood type. She's more like a sexy chick in college and that's what makes her freaking hot. Lena is sexy too, but she kind of has that ho-stamp thing going on because of the tattoos.

And see, when I read the books, I enjoy the in depth description, and a storyline where I don't feel like the characters are safe. It's like when you read Lord of the Rings for the first time ; you know to some extent after the first third that Frodo isn't going to get brutally murdered after being captured by Orks. Or Harry Potter ; you know the dude won't get bludgeoned by a troll the first time it pops up in the series. Not so with Martin, and it keeps you on your toes. Anyways, different tastes for different folks. I for one, welcome his elaborate descriptions and expansive universe, and the feeling of semi-realism brought on by senseless atrocities on occasion, specially during time of conflict.

I have to admit though ; not really a fan of the HBO series. Interesting for some performances, but it's waaaaay to fast, and ditches really cool details and storylines. Like the relationship between the Hound and the Mountain, which is given all of 2:30 in the series, or between the Hound and Sansa. But I digress, and I know it's just my typical "the book was better" banter, lol.

anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

This. I'm a huge fan of his style. ASOIAF is by far my favorite fantasy series. His prose is almost poetic at times and I get totally lost in his world. To an extent, he has ruined almost all other fantasy literature for me. If I read almost anyone but Tolkien now, I just get sad because of how much worse the writing is than GRRM.

I'm only a few hundred pages in, but that's been my experience so far, too. Perhaps reading "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and "The Girl Who Played With Fire" got me desensitized to too much description. At least in ASOIAF so far it's been descriptions of things that matter, not of every single sandwich every character eats or an itemized list of what someone bought at Ikea, just for the stuff to only be mentioned in other useless descriptions.

After reading the first 4 books 5 times and the 5th twice, I've come to believe that every single word is important. He foreshadows, subtly and a lot.

He's got an absolutely fantastic writing style, second, to me, only to Tolkien and Pratchett in the fantasy world.
Orks by Stan Nichols was a horrible read to me because of the writing style. The Name of the Wind was the same. Orks wasn't even a great story so it wasn't such a letdown, but The Name of the Wind could have been. Such a shame...

I'm on the third book of The Wheel Of Time right now and while the style has improved since the first book, it's still not very engaging. Too many shortcuts in the story as well.

To my mind it seems as if the better fantasy books derive the stories from the world. A lot of authors make up the world as the story goes; this is where shortcuts happen and the story develops gaps. Tolkien had mastered avoiding this trip.
