Default Gibson SGs are the ****.

Today I tried some nice guitars just to see what I'm missing.

First I went with a Gibson LP Studio 60's Tribute. P90's and a thin translucent finish.
Then a new Traditional. In both guitars the tone was there (setups were goddamn horrid though) but I just can't gel with the fat heel and the lack of access to the higher frets.

Then I tried a Gibson SG Standard. And it left me wondering why I haven't got one already.

The neck access is excellent, the tones are gritty and percussive. Only thing I didn't like is that it probably doesn't lend itself to very sweet tones from the neck pickup, but I can live with that.
The thin body, everything is right there. The neck was really fat but it was comfy for my hands.

If I sell my Strat and my Cube 60, and add a bit of cash, I could buy one.
I'll have a NGD thread in a couple of months.

You could always change the pickups like I did... Just sayin. Now that the caps I ordered are here, I just might install the set of Phat Cats & Orange drops in my SG Standard tomorrow.

Zhangbucker does some neck pickups for 24 fret guitars (or SG's where its pushed toward the bridge). A set of those would be unreal...he does great work with higher output 42awg winds.

That was my exact same feeling when I tried a recent SG Standard.

Only thing I really like about the '70s Gibson SG is its neck pickup on the sweet Les Paul spot.

However, having the neck pickup away from where the 24th fret should be is what gives that signature SG neck tone. I always felt that my SG didn't sound like an SG on the neck pup.

You are aware that all guitars come from the factory with a generic setup that has to be tailored to the individual player, right?

but I just can't gel with the fat heel and the lack of access to the higher frets.
Randy Rhoads did alright with it, and despite the internet rumors, he was just a man, not a god.

Didn't bother Gary Moore, either, or John Sykes.

Love SGs. I'd like another, one of these days. Of course, I only had a Worn Brown from a few years back and then an 80s Burny copy...

...the Burny slayed. The Gibson had a better neck, however.

anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

SGs are my fave feel of the gibsons, along with Explorers. Quick attack ..agressive. Not lazy feeling like a les paul. Brash. Thin body is usually very resonant.hate the control and toggle positions.

Neck pup is easily changed. Stock 490 is so so.

^Les Paul hated the SG shape, FWIW. Hence the renaming of them.

I've owned 3 in my life. Could not stand how neck-heavy they were. I prefer a guitar to stay where I put it without having to use a high-friction strap, and without having to use my fretting hand OR hold it tightly with my picking arm.
