    Default Epiphone Dot

    Hi,
I have just completed modding my Epiphone with a pearly gates in the bridge and a jazz model in the neck. Also upgraded the pots and wiring. I chose the pick up config from what I had read and heard on the SD site. The jazz seems to have a lot more output compared to the pearly gates in the bridge.

Does this seem like an odd combo?

I went with Seth Lovers in both positions in my Dot, it is beautiful. I have a PG neck/ JB bridge in my Epi Les Paul. I don't think your combo is odd, but my JB is of course hotter than the Pearly Gates. I am not sure of the difference between the Jazz and the JB, but I think it makes sense that the Jazz has more output. Maybe the PG needs a height adjustment?

In my experience neck pickups sound fuller than bridge pickups, and that may give you the aural illusion of higher output.

Also what Rocco said, you should check the height of the pickups to balance their output.

Just bear in mind you should do like this: Press the last fret of the guitar in the first and last strings, one at a time while you adjust the height, and keep each side of the pickups AT LEAST 2mm away from the strings. Any less than that might cause you loss of sustain. And have fun!

PGb and a Jazzn should not be incompatable.

Stp one is get the height right. Necks need to be lower, bridges a little higher. Dig up th Gibson specs.

Should be a nice sounding set.

As for the output you do not have a super hot bridge pickup (like a JB or Custom, etc) so even thought the pickups are calibrated you will need to tweak the heights and such to get a good balance.

Neck pickups are significantly louder than bridge pickups IME...at least until they are tinkered with.

Just work only with the bridge pickup height until you are happy with the sound of it, dont use the neck at all.
Forget about output or factory specs and juts use your ears to tell you when you have the sweet spot where the string vibrate freely and sustain and all is good in your world. Once thats done, then start lowering the neck pickup and switch back and forth until you are happy with the balance.
On most 335's there is a big difference in pickup height to acmmodate the amplitude of the strings. Even a matched sef of pups you will get this. However in your case, its worth bearing in mind that the Jazz is a lot clearer and more present than the PG. If you cannot get a satisfactory balance after doing the heights, you might want to consider installing an A2 magbet into the jazz, so its response is more akin to that of the PG. Jazz with A2 is a sweet as hell pickup that still gives plenty of articulation. So dont be afraid to do it if it comes to that.

Cheers for all the feed back.. I have since double checked my soldering due to paranoia. I will start tweaking now. It could be the illusion on the fuller sound. This was my first post and Im really thankful for the awesome tips!

    You guys rock!
