Default Is this forum a Mono Culture?

I'd like to be proven wrong, but it seems to me like guitar pick-up geeks (I am one!) on this and the Dimarzio forum seem to overwhelmingly key in on Van Halen, Dimebag, Shred and Hair Metal type tones by a big majority.

I'm older than a lot of players here (I'm 55) and I know quite often when music lovers age they tend to branch out with what musical styles they get excited about. Maybe that's part of it?

I enjoy reading these pick up forums a lot, but I wonder how many who read this thread could chime in on guitar sounds they love that aren't like the ones mentioned above? (even though I like those styles myself)

Besides loving modern style players/bands such as Mike Akerfeldt, Gorgoroth, My Dying Bride, a few players/bands outside of the Metal genre for me would be:

    Danny Gatton
    John Scofield
    Jeff Beck
    Ry Cooder
    Frank Zappa (pre Stratocaster FZ)
    Reverend Horton Heat

Who else here can get just as jacked up on players/bands other than Hair Metal-VH-Pantera-Slayer type tones?

C'mon Dudes and Dudesses (how many FEMALES are on this forum?!)

Maybe you need to spend more time reading the forum before you make judgements like that.

I read this (and the Dimarzio ) forum daily- I didn't come to my conclusion (actually, it's not a conclusion, it's a guess) flippantly.

I also hope I don't sound insulting- I was just hoping I'd hear about a lot of other types of music forum dwellers here like.

    What's wrong with that?

Also, I've been reading long enough to remember when everyone and they're uncle raved about SRV and David Gilmour- just to point out that I haven't just been reading since 2010.

I was hoping my question would be more of a teaser type of challenge than a put down.

No. We have a few old farts who aren't into metal. We have a few country and church pickers, too. Lots of people are into Blues and Classic Rock as well. I'm a big Reverend HH and Richard Thompson fan myself but I like metal, too.

Dimarzio has a forum? LOL dam!

I wonder how many "Which Dimarzio sounds close to "insert Duncan pickup here" threads they have?

Personally, I despise the music of those examples you gave in your first paragraph.

I listen to and (try to) play a little bit of everything. I'm mostly influenced by hard rock, punk and spacey, instrumental post-rock stuff. I like hardcore, doom, sludge, classical, rap, hip hop, trance, classic rock, some metal, indie, grunge, pop, blues, acoustic, singer-songwriters, electronica, folk, trad, even some country.

Don't get me wrong; there's a tonne of bands and musicians that I don't like. However, I don't think I'm really limited by genre.

If the music is honest then I'll give it a shot. If I like it, I like it. If I don't, I move on.

I really don't like 99% of hair metal and shred, though. They're the only genres I can think of where bands I like are extremely few and far between.

In terms of the forum in general? I actually think we have more variety here than most guitar forums do. All you have to do is go and have a quick look through the Tips and Clips section.

Every love that made me lose my reasoning. Every chord that made my conscience ache. Every day spent counting hours. Well, none of them comes close to singing back a song inside my head.

If KRKBAB is referring to the majority of SD Forum members, IMO, he's probably right. All you gotta do is read the forum and see who so many of the members are wanting to sound like or who and what they admire. If you want to know more about anyone, look to what they admire. Is it guns? Plenty of admiration for those here. Is it alcohol? Plenty of that too. Is it violence and revenge? Well, you get the picture.

The forum seems to be mostly young dudes and like many young dudes without much experience in life, they seem to love all things fast and aggressive. But because they're young and can't think for themselves yet (even though I'm sure they'd argue that they can) I think they'll grow out of it.

But read the backs of some of the boxes that Duncan pickups come in and you'll see the pickups described as being "punishing", etc. That says something to me. It says SD Pickups knows who their market is.

I like the great blues players like BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Freddie King, SRV and Mike Bloomfield. And the great rock players like David Gilmore, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Eddie Van Halen. I think Eddie was the most interesting guitarist to come along since the first wave of great 60's guitarists. Also like Bruce Springsteen, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Mark Knopfler. And jazz artists like Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. And acoustic artists like Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Lyle Lovitt, Bob Dylan, John Renbourne and Burt Jansch. And many, many, many more.

I can't stand metal. I dislike the music and I dislike the vocals and what the lyrics preach.

But I like the forum and think the world of many of the members here and of Seymour and Evan...and MJ has wound me some of the best pickups I've ever owned!

However. like the OP, I do wish I could find a guitar oriented forum that is as cool as this one, but that also has a more well rounded appreciation of all music.

But what are you gonna do? The kind of music favored here is what teenage boys seem to like.

Dude, I'm 24 and I'm pretty sure the average forum member is older than me. This forum is far from a collection of teenagers.

There's a couple of other things I'd call you on, but I don't want to seem too young and aggressive.

I don't hang out on the dimarzio forum or buy their pickups (new) because the company abuses the US intellectual property system. Has nothing to do with music.

Sound wise, I like Michael Schenker (actually both Schenkers), Blackmore, the guy from Fates Warning when not playing Fates Warning songs, some Iommi, early EVH (playing, not talking), Thomas Youngblood.

I'm 36 and I probably listen to the craziest **** of anyone on here, it's not necessarily something you "grow out of". That said, I'm def not the norm here, I think we have a good variety of players and listeners here, and I've been exposed to some stuff I wouldn't have been otherwise. Some of the younger dudes are enamored with certain players and getting specific sounds, but the majority of the regulars are not, and they're definitely not limited to playing metal.

it seems a little cyclical. seems to be a lot of 'grandpa rock' guys around right now. you can look around the search function a bit and see that a few years ago, there were more 'harder rock' guys. but I really don't see where there's a big majority of shred and hair metal guys on here lately... if there were, it'd be a lot cooler place.

I think the teen domination is a bit exaggerated here, there's LOTS of blues hounds in here. Country is probably a bit underrepresented, but then so is bop.

As for my view on music types, there is no bad genre, only bad interpretation and/or execution. I even hesitate to say I don't like hip-hop because I've been around the block enough times to know that as soon as I say that, somebody is going to come along who does something with it that really grabs me.

I think "post rock" is a strange term because rock is forever...
In 1861 as the Confederate forces were about to fire on Fort Sumter, the blue and gray had infinitely more in common than the blue and red today. What fellowship can "the truth shall set you free" ever have with "there is no truth, only points of view", or "what is truth?"

Secession would be a horror. But barring a major national crisis like a Black Death magnitude epidemic or nuclear attack to erase once and for all the myth that truth is negotiable, it is coming.

As with most "Why no love for _____?" threads, I think that the OP sees what he wants to see. Just 'cause folks aren't asking for tips on copping so-and-so's tone doesn't mean that people don't listen to old so-and-so.

I think this forum is Balanced. Yes I do get the feeling that a majority are into death metal, Thrash & and doom metal. But overall very very balanced forum. Compared to any other forum I am on. I like classic rock & blues a lot. I play church Music a lot. And I can say there are a lot of all those guys here. Again I think Overall it is very balanced.
