Default Single Coil that sounds like a JB?

    Howdy,

This might seem like a weird question, but more often, I'm finding I like the sound of a hot single coil pickup in the bridge. Is there a JB of the single coil world?. Something that has the mid spike and zing of a JB, but sounds more like a single coil pup and less like a humbucker.

Probably, but there is the single sized humbucker JB Jr.

but the JB jr is a humbucker in strat form. I'm looking to find an actual single coil that sounds similar to a JB, but isn't a humbucker.

SSL6, it does have a certain mid push, sounds heavier than a typical vintage single coil.

    Or try a P90.

Dimarzio Chopper is another good option.

However, nothing will sound like a JB except a JB, been around the world in that regards, and JB is quite unique among pickups.

The Fastrack II sounds more like a JB than the JB Jr. The JB Jr is a good choice for a neck compliment. I never should have changed out the Fastrack II/Duckbucker/JB Jr pickguard I had.

There's no such thing. There's no single coil that sounds like a JB. However, the most toneful, high output single coil I've ever used is the Duncan Custom Shop alnico 2 Hot for Tele pickup. I have one in my favorite Stratocaster. It's also called the '53 JB. It's the one Seymour uses in his Esquire and, IMO, it cannot be beat - whether in a Stratocaster or a Tele. The Duncan Twangbanger is Strat sized and also excellent but not the equal of the '53 JB. Perhaps MJ in the Duncan Custom Shop could wind you something similar to the '53 JB Tele pickup in a Strat pickup size.

For a true single coil, my vote would go for the 1/4lb'er.

For a true single coil I would recommend the SSL6.

This is like asking for an apple that tastes like a hardboiled egg.

The reason it sounds the way it does is because it's a humbucker.

My question would be, why do you want it to be a single coil rather than a single sized humbucker? Just enjoy the hum? I don't get that part. Is it just the visual thing?

As others noted, there are some DiMarzios that might come close but nothing is going to really sound like a full sized JB.

There is a VERY simple answer to your question...Is there a single coil that sounds like a JB?

    The answer is simply...."No".

I have an anderson hn3. when i use split it and use the north coil only, it sounds like the single coil version of a jb. There has to be a single coil pup that sounds like a jb.

A single coil won't sound exactly like a humbucker. However, I would call the Custom Shop and see what they could do. I'd bet MJ could get pretty close.
Gibson LP Melody Maker -- stock, Epiphone Dot -- Jazz neck and '59 bridge, Fender Telecaster Blackout Deluxe -- stock, 90's MIM Standard Strat with Duncan Texas Hot Custom in the bridge.
