Default dead output transformer...any coming back from this?

so i was offered a trade for my laney and egnater for a series 1 mesa roadking...with a blown output transformer. the guy says it has to be sent back to mesa and its a $150 fix, he just doesnt have a box big enough to send it back. long story short i told him if he gets it fixed, id be very interested, but will the amp ever sound the same after replacing the output transformer?

It should be no different than rewinding a pickup. If it's out of warranty, why not look for a local company that does rewinds and see what they'd do it for.

People replace/swap OTs all the time. As long as nothing else got blown you'll be fine. A local tech could likely fix it as well. But best to let Mesa take care of their baby and that way you've got some protection if it shows-up DOA.

ah ok. i can put a guitar together blindfolded, but when it comes to amps i get terrified. in my mind it was like replacing a neck on a bolt on. it may sound better, it may sound worse, but it will sound different. i had no idea that its something wound up like a pickup.

and this is why i come to you guys <3 hahaha

It's a fairly new amp...the transformer is still being made and things are much more constant these days...

If you were asking about a 1964 AC-30 or an old Hiwatt or Tweed Fender for example I'd say modern day repro would be your best bet and as close as it might be it will likely never be the same but for a new Mesa...no worries.
