    Default Pearly Gates question .

I have all maple body electric guitar with tom bridge, rosewood fingerboard. i am in interes to buy Pearly Gates, for both, bridge and neck position... the question is, is that two exactly same humbuckers, sounded different on bridge and neck positions... i already have try pearly gates in neck position, and really like it, but now i want one pearly gates for bridge position, and i don't really know what to order... so it's the same humbuckers for bridge and neck, or something else?

Almost all humbuckers are designed to be fitted in either the bridge or neck position, but very rarely both. For the Pearly Gates, there are two versions available; one for the bridge and one for the neck.

Check on the back of the Pearly Gates you have to see which position it was intended for - there should be a small sticker on there, with either SH-PG1N for the neck version, or SH-PG1B for the bridge version on it.

The bridge has a bit more output and increased mids.

    Based on what, exactly?

Make no mistake, the PGb is a fine pickup. It will sound fine on a Les Paul type guitar. Possibly, a bit too edgy on an ES or SG. The characteristics that make the PG a great neck/Rhythm position pickup might be annoying in the bridge/Treble position. Something a little darker might be better.

I am very keen on pairing the PGn with a Brobucker. This may be outside your budget.

The Pearly Gates Plus would be a candidate if it were available in colours other than white. Of course, you could always obtain a regular PGb and change the magnet from A2 to A5.

In the 1950's and 60's only Gibson manufactured the humbucking pickup design we all know and love when we think of a humbucking pickup and Gibson only made one model and used the exact same pickup for the bridge position as for the neck position. The result was that the neck pickup always sounded louder and fuller - due to it's position in relation to the string. The string moves more over the neck pickup than it does over the bridge pickup.

These days most humbucker models are made with the neck pickup wound weaker than the bridge pickup so that the volume of each, when used in the location on the guitar intended, is closer to the being the same.

Use a PGb for the bridge position and a PGn for the neck position.
