Until two years down the road, when Apple changes the design somewhat, and those interfaces won't fit the new design? Alesis is already on their second "adapter" for the I/O dock.

Then the iPad itself isn't upgradable, so you really are locking yourself into a platform. It might be fine today, but three years from now you'll be replacing the whole thing.

This is a losing game no matter what hardware you get. I learned long ago that if you have something now and it works, great. Consider that your tool you use to get things done. If it works now there is no reason to upgrade to latest bells and whistles.

That Mackie board looks seriously awesome.

These days the arguments for and against each OS are diminishing. I always tell people to get what makes the most sense for them. There isn't one clear superior choice.

I'd REALLY like to get one of those Mackie boards for the band.

Line6 has a better one, but it costs A LOT more.

I use both and everything I do with MAC takes about half the time on PC. I use MAC/ProTools only if I really have to. Subjective, alright.

I'm still using my old studio machine from 2006 or so most of the time that is a single-core, optimised to hell 1.7 GHz AMD machine with a bombproof mainboard and 2GB ram. I run many plugins in external DSP units and I use some outboard gear to take some load off the processor. Because of its reliability I make albums with that so yes the machine of your choice is much more than capable of the application

Life has always been interesting to me

This debate is like Coke vs. Pepsi, Chevy vs. Ford, Gibson vs. Fender, and so on. There's going to be a big group of people on one side or the other that will defend and try to explain why what they use is better....and the other side will never be convinced.

That's even more true now than it was in the past. It used to be when they had different hardware there was a measurable reason to use one over the other. Now it's just the look and feel of the OS with both of them having very similar functionality for 90%+ of home users.

If you are going to be natively developing iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch apps, then you MUST buy a mac. Otherwise, you don't have to. They are well made though. The quality IS there...

Yep, Apple definitely makes excellent hardware. Their attention to detail is quite impressive. I have yet to see a PC manufacturer that comes close in terms of overall hardware quality.

Whenever someone complains that Apple computers cost too much for what they are, I use the BMW vs Hyundai analogy. Both companies make cars and SUV's that can do the same things. If all you want is a Hyundai, get a Hyundai. Some people would rather own a BMW though.

Assembling computers is plug and play these days.

    1. Stick CPU onto mobo
    2. Stick RAM into mobo
    3. Screw mobo into case
    4. Stick gfx card into mobo
    5. Stick HDD and optical into case
    6. Run connectors (power to fans, cpu and sata to drives)

You're really talking about less than two hours of work. Parts can be had for cheap from many discount stores. It's crazy that anyone would ever pay a PC manufacturer to put their computer together. My computers are cheaper than Macs, and have better quality hardware.

....Yeah like Hyundais are bad vehicles in the first place!!!
The comparison is not very good....BMW's are mostly very expensive due to the fact that they are made in Germany, where the average worker cost alot in saleries!
And it is mostly specialised expensive cars, while Hyundais are middle and higher middle class cars.....
    Apple do not make anything....
They get a Chinese factory to make it for them, Apple has a brand that people thinks is the top of the cake....they are good at getting attention of the masses!

There is alot more out there than Mac and their iStuff.....

C'mon, Macs are obviously superior. That's why they've only penetrated 5% of the computer market after all these years.

Only an engineer would assume that "anyone" can put a computer together from parts.

I'm talking about the computer as a whole, not the sum of its parts. If you put a Macbook Pro and an equivalently-spec'd Dell or Toshiba side by side, the difference in design and build quality is plainly obvious. To some people, that's worth something.
