Exclamation An entirely new style of pickup, an idea.

I had this idea today, now, I'm no pickup engineer or anything, I'm honestly not extremely sure of how they work besides the basics, but I had an idea today..

Now, brands like Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, etc make "Mini-humbuckers" designed to replace the single coils of a guitar like the stratocaster or telecaster, I had a weird idea today, what if they took two mini-humbuckers, and would them together? I would be very interested to see the results. Now, as I've said I'm not very sure of the science of pickups, so this idea could result in either greatness, or catastrophic failure. I think it would also be very convenient if these pickups came with a coil tap, just so you can get a standard Humbucker sound whenever you need it.

Thoughts on this? Would you be interested in the results, or am I just going to be burned at the stake for not knowing a bunch of obvious facts stating why this is a bad idea.

dimarzio used to make a four rail pup. it was like a fast track and chopper on a bucker baseplate.

There are plenty of quad coil/rail pickups. Artec, Dimarzio, Armstrong and Kramer all have them. Although the Armstrong, Artec and Kramer may be the same.

I've tried a few of them. The only one (for me) that's worth using is the one Jeremy described, called the Multi-Bucker. I wish I had bought another when they were available.

Yea, the old Dimarzio Multibucker was basically that. Two of the single coil sized humbuckers on the same baseplate and each with it's set of 4 conductors to go crazy on the wiring.

Here's a pic I found on google. That one is made of a Chopper and a Fast Track I, DP184 and DP181 resp.

The blackhawk is just 2 coils, I think. I kinda want to try them but so very pricey...

My MB is not wired that way. I bought it new, and it has 4-cond.+grnd for the whole pickup. Maybe some versions were 8-conductor?

You are right, it's 4 cond. plus ground. I was confusing it with the Motherbucker.

I've got an idea. You take a P90, and wire it together with half of a Strat sized rail pickup. Because the p90 and the rail together would make a full sized humbuckers. Then you could sell it as something like a P-Rails.

That's not nearly as good as my idea. Check it out.

Imagine if you took a humbucker and threw away everything except the stud coil. Then you replaced the pole pieces with small cylindrical magnets.

I haven't thought of a name for this yet. I'm open to suggestions.

Dude that would rock! then what you should do is take and arch or stagger the magnets so that it matches the radius of the fret board so you get even string response.

anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.
