Very interesting, it looks likes everyone has their prefered brand or not. I think I'm going to go with mogami for my main guitar cable and I'm going to try a balanced mic cable for the pedal board and neutrik connectors and make my own.

We use these in the studio for instruments with unbalanced output signals: Vovox

For balanced, there is no match for old AMT Siemens cables in my opinion. Not just because of clarity but mechanical construction and durability.

Onstage I'm happy with Klotz cables and Neutrik plugs. I trust only what I assemble so my cables last for more than a decade. In theory as they become lost in between so I'm about soldering a new set after every 5 years, approximately

I used to have Live Wires, but those are really crapping out on me and I HATE how they twist and tangle up in each other. So soon I will be using GFS solderless cables. I hate repairing normal cables because I need 4 arms to hold everything in place. Solderless looks so simple and reliable to me.

You basically get what you pay for. But, that doesn't always mean that an $100 cable is better for you than a $50 one. It's just that the more that you pay for one, the more quality work has probably gone in to develop it.

The cables I usually use are of low capcitence just because they are. lol

But, I go for the sound and feel of a cable when I'm dialing in tones.

Just keep in mind your applications. Constant switching between guitars, straight into amp, pedal-heavy setup, long runs, etc.

My main guitar cable is Monster and has worked great. The speaker cable from my amp head to cab is a Live Wire. The patch cables on my pedal board are all the cheap little ones from Mars Music back when they were in business. I probably should replace the patch cables but everything else has worked great for me.

Monster Studio Pro 1000 for speaker and instrument, for about 10 years now. Bought them in 2002 and never had to replace them. They sound great too.

I've been reading lots and lots of posts here and other fourms and there are lots of different opinions out there. From what I gathered from the differents posts it looks like you should use a low capacitance cable between the guitar and the first pedal or equiment in the rig to reduce any unwanted noise and or coloring because the signal is so weak, and for cables with in your rig you should use a twisted cable with a shielding wire only connected at one end inside the cable because the signal is stronger. For speaker cables you should use unshielded speaker cable. So whats your guy's opinion about this???

P.S. I know that sometimes people do want a different cable between their guitar and the first peice equipment to color their tone, but I'm not looking to discuss that. I speaking about the more basic setup.
With passive guitars, you need low capacitance all the way to the first stage that changes impedance. Obviously that means between guitar and first pedal.

But if the first pedal (or the pedalboard) has a true bypass then you need a low capacitance cable behind it, too.

The recommendation to use microphone cable (two thicker leads inside the shield) is nonsense. The resistance is lower but the resistance of the low capacitance guitar cable is not significant in the first place. The only advantage of using microphone cable would be that they are more robust and sometimes have better shielding. They won't do any damage if used in low impedance circuits inside a guitar rig, though. Whether you connect both or one of the two leads inside doesn't matter in this context.

If you are very low on cash it's better to concentrate the money in highest quality low capacitance cables until the preamp and then use cheaper microphone cable inside the rig (low priced microphone cable will be more robust and better shielded than low priced guitar cable).

@uOpt you bring up a good point about if the pedals being true bypass or not. My pedal are true bypass so maybe I should just run the mogami cable all the way through the rig.

What do you guys think of using the solid 1/4" connectors between pedals? I'm using 3 of them right now because the pedal are identical and I don't actually use the pedals on the floor right now.

this thread reminded me I have one cable using the cheap pedal connector on my pedalboard. so I replaced it with expensive audiophile mogami like people here, after reading this thread

I'd use whatever sounded good to you, lo cap or mid cap.

I like lo cap for Strats (Bill Lawrence) and a mid cap (Whirlwind/GLS) for Telecasters. There's a subtle difference. Lo-cap does seem to hit the amp a bit harder, but with my others there's a emphasis on the lower end that benefits the Tele.

If you can have only one cable from Guitar to pedalboard, I'd go for a low cap 1st.

    Just my opinion right now.

Those don't work very well for me, I always feel that the pedals don't lie down naturally and that these things wear out the plugs.

For longer cables, I'm sold on some custom Lava cables that Mark made me - they're Sommer GCB cabling (which he doesn't carry any more sadly) with Lava silver 1/4'' plugs. The Sommer GCB cable is probably the first cable I heard that really impressed me from the first note. It's punchy, but very balanced... I can't stand cables that over emphasize certain frequencies. You do get what you pay for and good cabling and buffering makes some of the biggest difference in guitar tone yet gets completely neglected by 90% of the guitar playing population.

For patch cables, I use the guy that makes my favorite speaker cables: Mulder Audio. Fantastic products. One of these days, I will try out his longer guitar cables. They don't get near the exposure as many other boutique cable companies (aka Vovox, Evidence, etc.), but they're phenomenal.

Speaking of it, I would like to have another spool of Belden instrument cable. It is $500-$600 for 500 feet and sometimes 1000 feet (availability changes).

    Anyone up for sharing?

(still mad that most of my Belden based cables magically transformed to Klotz and similar junk when I wasn't using my gear in the 1990ties and was loaning it out ).

Long cable runs are provided by Spectraflex.

Pedal interconnects are provided by DiMarzio.
