Default JB with the customs ceramic magnet?

Has anyone tried this? what does this do to a JB? doen it by any chance make the JB have more clarity under real high gain?

I'd say the JB is already pretty clear under high gain.

But IMO, you are basically turning it into a distortion by doing that. Or something very similar, which is pretty articulate under gobs of gain...

maybe clear was the wrong word, i am talking note separation, so that when you play a open E all the notes in the chord are not smearing together? you know what i mean? The JB is a amazing pickup but i need a bit more separation like a PAF pro has,if the paf pro was a duncan and had a touch more output it would be my favorite pickup

This is comparable to what I use now, a Dunc Dist lite I.E. A single sized ceramic bar in the Dunc Dist Sh-6. Because the magnet is stronger than the JB 's alnico5, it will drive harder, & tighten your bass. The tradeoff is that the high end may seem brighter & ceramics aren't as warm as alnico.

So my answer is: It would have less clarity in theory, but with a heavier pickup character, you could use less gain thus have cleaner leads, yet sound heavier with more chunk coming from banging a metal string rather just driving the tube.

The cool thing about the DD lite is it has some JB mid growl but mostly DD chunk. Bottom line, YOU SHOULD DEFinitely TRY IT.

If you want PAF pro style separation, then why not try the Custom instead of taking the magnet out?

I did try the custom it is bottom heavy where the paf pro is more even?
I may just stick with a paf pro and settle for the lower power. i wonder if a A8 would make the pro more aggressive?

There is a mag swapping tutorial on youtube where the guy swaps the magnet in a PAF pro for a A8.

DIstortion is uber articulate. I think the full shred is the last word in articulate and the only thing more so than the Distortion.

That's my video. The A8 magnet keeps things sounding fairly similar, but yeah, it adds some more output.

Hmm. That's good to know! It's the video I used as a guide when I did my first mag swap!

I tried the ceramic in one of the newer sh4's and did not like it,harsh is the first word that comes to mind, the A2 however sounded real musical, real nice mids and the JB still sang and had those crazy ass hamonica'z!

i use a custom/jb hybrid with the ceramic mag. It's my favorite bridge pickup right now by far. string separation is phenominal. its fuller than the DD and more articulate than the regular custom. big bottom end and very aggressive
