Default Hsh issue 59' ssl5 jb

A 1993 mg104 washburn (usa built chicago cs). The original sd single died. I replaced it with a brand new ssl5. The 2 and 4 positions are thin sounding. Replaced the original custom/custom bridge with a brand new jb (love it) and the 2 and 4 are still mush. Wired exactly as the mg104 diagram shows. Reversed the leads on the ssl5 and still the 2 and 4 are thin. What do i need to do? Buying a new ssl5 rwrp is fine but i want to know if that will actually fix it.

    Any ideas?

    Sure.

1). Loosen the screws on the bottom base plate.

2). You might have to lift up some of the fabric tape on both ends to access the magnet underneath the coils, do so carefully. Next, push the magnet out with a flathead screwdriver. If the magnet still seems lodged, the wax coating that surrounds it may need to be heated in order to loosen it. A few seconds fanning a hairdryer over the back of the base plate is usually all that is needed (the wax should not be allowed to get too hot). Push the original magnet out with the tip of the flathead screwdriver and flip it.

Be VERY careful not to disturb the pickup leads and just be gentle overall. You might have to push kind of hard to get the magnet out but always sort of hold the pickup gently while you work on it.

You can read more about magnet removal and swapping here where most of this information is from.

ouch. Thanks for those great instructions. I will look at a couple loose humbuckers I have to see if that is something I would do.

Would a ssl5 rwrp fix this too?

A RWRP would fix it but... the mag flipping is really easy, the easiest electronic mod you can do to your guitar. Doesn't require any skills to perform. You will be blown away by how easy it is, but yes, A RWRP pickup would solve your problem immediately.

ok. I will try a test case on some 'duncan' designed I have laying around. If that goes smoothly I will give it a shot.

    the answer is yes....

I turned the magnets (yes it was easy, and thanks for the instructions) and that made it a little worse and then I reversed the wires on the ssl and it is great (not perfect but that is not the polarity or wrirings fault). I had reversed the wires before with no luck so it was a combination of the both that did it.

That said, the out of phase are still a little weak for my tastes but still good. I don't really use them much so I don't care a whole lot (I have a strat for that).

The sound of the washburn on the original 59' is beautiful, the new ssl5 is silk, and the new JB at the bridge is outrageous. An incredible combination. The old custom custom at the bridge was not even in the same ball park for either hard rock or screaming blues.

That said, I no longer have that near chorus sounding out of phase that the original set of pickups had but thats ok, I don't play 'depeche mode'.
