I've been soaking my Gibson truss rod cover in coffee grounds and water for twelve hours now with no visible difference. I know people have done this in the past, but what is the secret?

I put it in strong strong esspresso and leave it for a few days.
It is pretty muck just grounds and water. I put the mixture in the microwave for a minute so it is pretty saturated. There is really no change after almost 24 hours. I was told by someone to put some alcohol in the mixtire to soften the plastic. All I have in the house is vodka and I don't think that will work.![]()
Shoe polish?

Kiwi brown shoe polish. Coffee takes a while to age modern plastics, way more than 24 hours.

We always had really hit-or-miss success with coffee in our shop. Sometimes it would work overnight and other time we'd leave something in there for days with no luck.

Oh yeah. Soaking it in a glass of pee pee will, of course, do what you're looking for.

Put the parts out in the hot sun for a few weeks. Sun makes everything looked aged.
I think I'll try the shoe polish. I need a cream color so that may work.
smoke on it. let somebody who smokes do it for you if your a non-smoker.
make sure the coffee was brewed just unbrewed coffee grounds wont do anything, i used brewed coffee to age photographs

use earl grey tea, make the tea with the boiling water and wait just a little while, do not take the tea bags out but once it has cool just a little put the truss rod cover in and leave it for just a little while. if you don't get enough color, take the truss rod cover out and nuke the tea. it only took me a few hours to get pickup covers aged nicely
I didn't brew the grounds, but I microwaved them until they were almost boiling. I guess it's just as close.Originally Posted by fourbanger_82

Sometimes, no matter what you do, the color doesn't adhere to the plastic.
I've had the best luck by removing the shiny-ness? by scouring it with Comet on a sock, so it dulls the white plastic. Then, use shoe polish, with maybe a bit of yellow curry powder mixed in.
I brewed some coffee this morning and dropped it in...OOPS!! Now its all melted and warped.Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new one anyway. Oh well.
