What amp/pickups for this tone??

I recently discovered some Metallica backing tracks done by some guy, thanks to Charvel (Tyler). Anyway, the guitar tones on these tracks are really smooth but crunchy and just overall great. Using Limewire, search for Metallica backing track.

I'm not sure how to post these so you guys can hear them since I don't have a site, but please take a listen and see if you can tell me what kind of amp or pickups or what not would create this sort of amazing tone. It's VERY similar to Metallica's Black Album tones. Metallica fans you know whatI mean about the smooth distortion on that album.
