Default Nut Device for adapting guitar to slide work?

Anyone remember where you buy those little machined pieces that go over your nut to raise the strings up for slide playing?

I remember looking at those a year or two ago, cant' remember where.

I'd like to take one of my guitars and set up the action really high and try to learn to play slide after watching Robert Randolph last night. Seems like something to do to get better.

I've also heard of guys sticking a chunk of a #2 pencil under the strings to raise them up.

    Thanks.

Never heard of it, but it sounds like a great invention. It would throw the intonation off, but it doesn't really matter, since you're not fretting any chords.

Yeah I remember them, check the Big Heart site I think they had them. All you really need to do is raise the action a bit and pop on 11's though, that'll more than get you started.

I would think most music stores would have them, no? The one I used to work for had a box of them in the accessories cabinet. About $5/pc as I recall...

Scott, I play quite a bit of slide, all I do is raise the action and play my normal 13's. Dont raise it too much, or you wont be able to fret, but raise it enough so there's no fretting out. It's alot better IMHO, to be able to play slide and fret in the same bar w/o having a long pause to switch guitars.

Hey Scott, you getting into Dobro? Any music store that caters to the folk crowd and concentrates on acoustic guitars, mandolins, etc. will usually have them in stock. Put a little tape on the bottem edges to protect your fingerboard and peghead finish cuz they'll leave a mark behind if you don't. Lew

Scott, I am not sure exactly what you are attempting to do, but these devices raise the strings up a very large amount. I don't think you will be able to fret any notes once this has been done. In essence this will make a round neck play like a square neck. If you are looking to play "slide" guitar, all you really need to do is raise thaction up a little. In some cases I have cut a new nut, but left the strings higher at this point. Just a little bit higher. I usually like to be able to fit a thin pick under the 1st string while fretting at the third. This is really just a little bit higher than the nut would normally be.
