Default Got a Splawn Quick Rod on the way!!! Need a good pedal to use with it...

    Hey guys,
I have no amp at the moment and am stuck using my Line 6 PODXT (sounds pretty darn good with headphones by the way). I heard about Splawn and check the website out and ordered a Quick Rod about 3 weeks ago, so it should be done very soon. I chose to go with it because i was looking for a hot-rodded Marshall sound, but didnt want it to be to compressed and had to fit my budget. The Splawn will definently cover my straight rock tones extremely well, thats why i bought it. But i also recently have got more and more into real aggressive stuff, thrash metal and real heavy rock etc. and want to find a pedal that will take my amp to heavy metal heaven when im in the mood to get really nasty. Im not really looking for a Zakk Wylde type sound or else i would just get a SD-1 or something like that. Im looking for a aggressive, tight, punchy distortion with good dynamics and clarity, not a Boss Metal Zone type sound, or a mushy Recto sound, but more the type of crunch that John Petrucci gets when he plays real heavy or a modern George Lynch type sound (not his old dokken and lynch mob sounds, the amps already got that covered). Any suggestions guys?

Thanks and ill let you all know when i get the amp.... I cant wait!!!

Actually, the SD-1 is pretty much the de facto standard for boosting a Marshall while still maintaining its inherent crunchiness. A Tubescreamer would work well to, but it kind of smooths things out due to symmetrical clipping.

Anyone else have anything to add? Maybe the SD-1 would do fine, i dunno. Does anyone know how a Keeley DS-1 works in front of a distorted amp?

For amps like that, go with a cleanboost OD with lots of natural gain on tap. My favorite 3 that come to mind are the Banzai pedals, Fireball II and Coldfusion, the T. Rex Dr. Swamp, or the Fulltone Fulldrive II or new OCD pedal. Some of these new boutiques are so fantastic sounding, they'll really light up that Splawn.
