It's actually a decent pickup. Very harsh and abrasive, but in a good way I prefer the Duncan Distortion, but if I got a Gibby with a 496R/500T set, I wouldn't be in a hurry to replace them.
Buy the book in my avatar. It's pretty cool.

Its not a bad pickup at all, but I swapped the 500T in my les paul with a custom and I like it a whole lot more now. the 500T definately works for metal, and will help to drive any amp that needs a bit of a push. I'd say go with an SD though, they're cheaper, they sound better, and if you don't like it you can always exchange it.
    Peace,
    Dan

Although the 500T and 496R sounded better than the 490 set (to my ears, anyway), I still thought they sounded a little muddy and dark.

I'm still selling my 500T, so if you're interested, hit me up.

It is a hot pickup with very nice mids. I would risk and say that it sounds like a JB but it is somehow thicker

I used to use these in my Strats all the time. If you want to hear a clip go to my band's website http://highergroundband.com/ and listen to "King of Kings". That's a Strat Ultra with a 500T in the bridge. I had two of those guitars set up exactly the same and used them for years. The clip is old and the sound quality is not the greatest but you can defintely hear it. It has got that honking characteristic to it that I used to love. Played the solo through a Marshall JCM900 SLX 100 watter. Enjoy! -Frank
