    Default which guitar?

ok. i might see if i can get a guitar as a graduation present. dont know if i can though, but i needs a new one fo sho. for the price range, im lookiong at 2. the prs billy martin, and the epiphone les paul custom. they are both $499, but i dont know which one i would pick. the desision is based on quality, sound, etc, not on looks or the people who play them. so which one and why?

i know you don't want to base it on looks and people who play them etc etc...but i woudln't be caught dead with that horrid looking fake PRS with a person from bad charollette attached to it lol...i think i rather be a...gasp...drummer hahaha.

overall in all honesty, that PRS is a joke of a guitar...go with the epiphone...or better yet, a tokai les paul copy (check ebay for tokai) which will cost around the same as an epi!

if you like the design of the Billy Martin SE, go check out the Ibanez SZ series. they are solid guitars.

I didn't like the feel of the SZs for some reason...Maybe it was the scale. They are purdy tho, fo sho.

good point the SZs are great guitars IMO...the other guitarist in my band plays one as his main guitar and i have no complaints with it...good sound a feel even with the stock pickups it's pretty good. a gold top one is on my list of guitars to buy!

is it necessary to have a set mahogony neck in a mahonony body to get a classic les paul sound? im probably gonna change out the pickups later on.

you wont get a LP sound/feel even if you have set neck mahog if your guitar is not LP shaped. for example the SG.

Yes. You'll also need it to be a singlecut design .. IMO of course

But it depends really.. there's benifits to having a dual cutaway design such as fret access. You'll have to weigh up to make sure you're making the right desicion.

Best way is to go try a few axes in your price range and see what fits you best, and use forums like this for extra advice like issues to look out for with a particular axe/praise for axes with certain features etc

the music i play is hard to explain. its like a mix of classic rock like the beatles (for lack of a better example) and new stuff like sum 41. what i need is flexibility.

play one before you get it See what all the fuss is about then.

I suggest a cheaper Schecter C1. Hardtail, set neck, 2HBs. You can find reasonable prices on them.

the LP is gonna be quite a difference to your squier. differences that you will immediately notice are (IMHO):
1.its shorter scale will result in lower string tension.
2.weight, probably heavier than your current strat.
    and many many more differences..

like danglybanger said go to a shop and try the LP.
get a feel of it. then tell us what u think. tell us the differences when u 1 vs 1 it with ur strat.
