I dont think epi makes a white explorer thats the thing

hmmm i know they did...my friend had one...unless it was painted, not sure about that but i doubt it. hmmmmmmmm....how about a dean then?? not 100% the same as the explorer (no guard and different headstock) but much closer than the exp.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...334068810&rd=1

i just can't reccomend either of those LTDs since i owned one and one makes me a bit sick when i look at it lol.

whats wrong with alder? lots of ppl own emg guitars made of something other than mahogany. look at kirk hammet. he uses maple which is way brighter than alder. imo emgs do well in alder.

if you want a deep, warm/ dark sound than go for a mahogony version. im sure they make it. alder is pretty smooth sounding, good for everything, but you dont get the bass mahogany gets. its a matter of personal taste.

Maybe I should just save a ton of cash and get the Gibson Explorer and then place a couple of EMGs in there? Maybe a V?

A wise man once told me to get the best instument that you can the first time round so you won't end up spending more money in the long run. If that mean saving up for a Gibson DO IT. If you settle for less you may never be satisfied! and I believe Gibsons hold better resale values too.

im probably the best person to answer this i suppose, seeing as i have an ex-351 (predecessor to the ex-400) and a viper-300 (predecessor to the viper-400). and honestly.....theyre both great. i gotta warn you ahead of time, both are slightly neck-heavy. but both of mine play and sound killer. the only real deciding factor i can give you is body weight. if you prefer i really light guitar, get the ex, but if you want something heavier, get the viper.

I really hate both of them so I didn't vote. IMHO, you should start saving for the Gibson - why buy a copy of your dream guitar that you're not completely happy with, that is half the price of the actual thing?

It sounds like you really want a Gibson Explorer. In that case, you owe it to yourself to save up money for it rather than spending it on a guitar you're not going to be completely content with.
