Hey I was wondering if anyone could tell me what Explorer type guitar that James Hetfield uses? I think its by ESP? Thanks

Its an ESP custom shop before gibson sued them over the body shape (i guess that was early 90's when those models were still being made)

i think it was the now called EX model, if i right it was the Explorer model, i guess thats what they used to called it.

the ones he used were set neck (they were all custom shop made stuff anyway).


and keep saving, i have a white gibson explorer and it kicks ass! mines got a JB in it though, not EMGs

Don't get a guitar based on what someone else uses, it almost NEVER works out. Get a guitar that YOU like playing and that plays and sounds well to YOUR hands and ears. I really like the tones that alot of bands get out of Mesa Recto's; but I'd never buy one for me.

It not that I want it just because he has it. I want it because the Explorer is a fast guitar. The first time I played one, my hand was moving the fastest it had ever gone! Thats why I want an Explorer. As for the color, I just like white better than black. As for EMG's....I play a lot of punk and metal, but who says that EMG's are for just those two genres? EMG's are nice because of the fact that every string gets picked up when playing. Excellent clean and killer Distorted tones is why I want a set of 81's!

Excellent cleans isn't what EMG's are for .

They're praised so highly for metal because of the definition under high gain. I've never heard them praised for punk music. When I think of punk, I don't usually think of defined high gain tones.

You'll find the cleans to be pretty sterile, expecially compared to a nice set of A5 or A2 Duncans.

you need to listen to more punk my friend lol.

emgs rock for punk. if you look at more modern (good) punk (not pop punk) it's fairly similar to old school metal real fast palm muted riffs with lots of gain and if you don't have an articulate pickup you get mush. my band is a cross b/t metal and punk and my guitar tone is very metal. i could go from one of my songs to some old metallica or some avenged sevenfold perhaps or similar without needing to change a setting. granted my sound won't be dead on with theirs but it will have more than enough chunk edge and gain to do any form of metal then right back into my metal/punk hybrid. if you listen to bands like strung out and even pennywise, the guitar sound is very metal sounding yet the music isn't 100% metal it's that mix.


from someone who has owned many emgs in many guitars i can say this...the 81 is great for metal lead work or if you like a harsher thinner more agressive real real tight tone. the 85 is the key in the bridge, nice full thick sound that picks up the low end where the 81 leaves off and calms down the top end edge. the 85 will do clean percectly fine also. granted if you plug and emg guitar into some cheap crate amp or a solid state you will not get that round full sound as you will from a tube amp. this will also effect the clean tone.

So what you are saying is that I should have a set of 85's rather than 81's or have the 85 in the bridge and 81 in the neck? I'm confused. The lead singer of CO&CA uses his with 2 81's and his cleans sound amazing...but he's also playing through a Mesa duel recto. Well I have a ESP LTD EX400BD which is basically a black version of the guitar Hetfield toured w/ nad used like during some of the 90's (his was silver diamond plate, mine is a black one) i love the guitar it's got a nice feel, great accesability...easy on the back ou just need a good leater strap because it's neck heavy...which is odd because it's a solid mahogony body with a metal plate on it...neway i love it....i bought it cause i love the look...but i also bought it cause i idolize Hetfield..so i guess i was the feel that had their guitar work out even though they bought it cause some1 else used it

....and the cleans are pretty bad.. the EMG's are too powerful and distort the cleans...i get better cleans from my stock $250 Agile..but distortion is amazing
