    He's badass...

It's intricate stuff, but it never sounds like he's showing off. The mark of a good bassist.

yeah, he's a great player. i love the guitar player in that band too. he gets some awesome tones. I know the guitar player plays various hollowbodies through a silvertone 2x10

I just heard The Distance yesterday and remarked how tastefully funky the bass is. I love the tone on that song. (I think I need to steal some of their CDs from my bro who used to be a huge fan)

I once read an interview with the band where they (or perhaps just the singer/guitarist) was asked how he/they got such cool and interesting tones. His answer? "By using sh*tty amps."

When I saw them live a couple years ago, the singer/ guitarist (McCrea?) had an acoustic w/ a pickup running into a tiny amp, which appeared from afar to be a Fender practice amp, and sounded pretty solid state. The guitarist ran through a newish tweed covered Fender 410 (or 310) and a hollowbody with HB's. They sounded pretty close to the way they sound on the albums.
