    Default SG...long or short joint?

I need so pros and cons rattled off if I can...I'm starting to entertain the notion of selling off my Les for a lighter and brighter SG. To be honest, I've always liked SGs but I think I got caught up in the whole Gibson Les Paul fantasy fray.

So SG players...which joint is better (to you) and why?

I started out playing SGs in '78 and I still think they're some of the greatest guitars in the world......with the exception of the new ones. I personally like the 70s era models. The neck joint seems to be a bit longer and as a result, sturdier. I've become a lot more physical player than I was in the 70s, though and don't really have any business playing SGs on stage. Lizzie (that would be my '76 LP Custom) feels much more solid to me than ANY of my SGs (and there are a few). Todays models have that shorter tenon and I just don't think they're quite as stable. And now you have my 2 cents!

I've got two fairly recently built SGs, and the joints feel soild to me. The only reason for that joint to give would be if you drop it....so don't!

Isn't the mortise/tenon join the same as it was in 1970? I thought that was the last time Gibson re-evaluated that stuff, except for the Custom Shop...

I have a 2004 Gibson SG Standard and it's great. No probs at all with quality, neck joint or elsewhere. I thought that all the new SGs had the longer neck tenon?

Pull the neck pickup and take a look.

You can see the tenon in my re-necked 71 Deluxe...

Any modern SG will have the same sized tenon.

Ive got a 61lp/sg and think it's very much a matter of taste- These are some of the least-wide necks ever on production gtrs and if you like this, it's a completely differnt feel from the late 60s on and the reason that Pete T stopped playing SGs-

I've never had any problems wiht the neck joint, but know better than to treat it rough-

But it did live thoguth about 6 years on the stage and probalby was knocked over at least 5 or 6 times and survived.

It's possible. I'm certainly not the foremost Gibson authority, but to my own observations, todays models don't seem to be as strongly built.

as far as i know there are two neck joints used on modern gibson sg guitars.

the '61 ri les paul/sg has a short tenon and to me has the best feel. you can get way up on the neck with out anything being in the way. its also the least stable, if you play with heavy strings and are very physical with the guitar you might have tuning problems. the other is the long tenon that is more stable but to me doesnt feel quite as nice

I was referring to the Custom Shop bringing back the long tenon.
