Default Why are SG's so popular for slide?

Duane Allman, Gary Rossington, Derek Trucks, EVH on "Dirty Movies"...I'm detecting a trend here!

You Can add Robbie Krieger to that list and maybe Rod Price? It's fair to say that Rossington & Trucks use the SG Cuz' of Duane. So why did Duane use it?
My guess is he discovered it had a upper midrange snall to it and it was light and easy to control. But that's just my guess?

I have a '68 SG Standard. I love the guitar.... it was my only guitar I had for a very long time, but I really don't like to play slide with it. It does sound good, but I am hearing things in my head that I can't seem to get out of an SG when it comes to slide. Maybe the PUPS not sure, so I am on the hunt for a Double cut with P90's I think that will be an Awsome sounding slide guitar. I may bring my SG to practice this week though and play it thru my Deluxe just to see what it sounds like. Who knows maybe its my Amps and the SG???

Plenty of room to hit the upper registers. On a Strat or LP, you can't quite hit the neck-pickup area without effort.
Guitars: 2006 Custom Order VOS '59 Reissue w/ MJ 'Duane PAFs'; 2002 '58 Reissue w/ RS Fralin Neck and Timbucker Bridge; 1989 Clapton Strat with Chubtone '63's; 1994 Tom Dodson Custom Strat with 14 year-old Hot Rails, and Classic Stack; 1991 Tele Plus Deluxe w/ Tremelo and Dually Red-Lace Sensors

Duncan Strat Pickups I've Tried: Hot Rails, 5/2's, Classic Stack, Antiquity I's & AII's, PGn and PGb, '59n and '59b, Standard Custom, Sreamin Deamon, various Antiquities & MJ Custom PAFs.

To me, it's access and tone-
If I was going for pure sustain I would go tele or LP-

To me, slide tone has to bite, but you cant overdrive without it going thin- Maybe you could get this with other pups on other bodies, but since the first time I saw Les Dudack, I've used my 61 lp/sg special and had nothing but great tracks- Going back to p90s on it and wonder if I'll need another SG for slide-

BTW, I stopped playing 24.75 a few years back, so I cut the barrel off of a screwdriver, ground down one side of it, padded it with a thin layer of masking tape, and cut the length slightly more than nut width- I insert it behind the first fret and get a great high action and can be back to regular action in about 30 seconds.
