I hope you aren't being sarcastic, but basically Seth Lover invented the humbucker pickup in the mid 50s and they were called "Patent Applied For" since they were just invented, and the name stuck...Thats what PAF means...They are usually alnico 2 or 5, but there are some of all alnico grades...Usually neck 7.5k-ish neck and 8.2k-ish bridge. PAFs (especially late 50s models) go for $10-$20k a pair on eBay...

I meant, and should've said, "What's the story behind your PAF; how'd you get it?"

I was all about the archtops & Jazz boxes in the 90's. I traded an old jazz player a 1952 Gibson L7 (w/ a floating D'armond p-up), for the ES175. We were at a small club/bar in N.Y. city, and both envied each others box, so we traded right there.

    You might try stealing.

If you can get away with it, theft's a much sounder financial option than actually buying a PAF.

But if you're not big on stealing, you can probabally get pretty close to a real vintage sound without buying an actual vintage PAF. There are at least 10 pickup manufacturers that pretty much focus on trying to recreate PAF tone in as much detail as possible. Hit up the les paul forum and you'll see all sorts of talk about them. These sorts of pickups run around $150 and up. SD makes quite a few types of pickups that are supposed to sound like PAF's as well.

A big thing with PAFs was that they were inconsistant. Back in the day, there wasn't the sort of standardization you have in modern pickup making. Therefore, there isn't really one set PAF tone, each individual PAF has their own quirks that really can sound quite different. But there are overriding characteristics that they all share, to varying degrees.

There's all sorts of info about real vintage PAF tone all over the internet, check some of it out. Again, the les paul forum's got tons of people who are obsessed with PAFs.

Just waiting for a cab on a rainy night is how this one strikes me... Really tasty... I can't play like this, so I greatly appreciate hearing it done so well.

    Great guitar man!!
Cool playing, that box sounds awesome.
One thing is the pickup, but here the guitar plays so well that he could have used a pos pickup and it would still have sounded good
    Thanks for the clip.
    Not gonna miss you know!

^ I pretty much agree w/ Rid. The guitar is so musical sounding that I have trouble figuring out which out-mojos* which, the pick-up, or the guitar.

*I, soo just made up the coolest word everrrr.
