    Default Gibson Les Paul SL.....Opinions?

My singer wants a new guitar for his Bday tomarrow and has $700 to blow. He's looking at a Gibson/Musicians Friend special guitar. Its the Les Paul SL with Humbuckers instead of p100's. The pup's are 490/498 which don't really matter since He'll just load it with Duncans in about a month or so.

Whats your opinion on this guitar?
I'll have a Gibson Flying V straight into a Mesa, hold the BS please!!!!!

I'd be more inclined to get a nice, used Studio with $700.00

He's also lookiong at the ESP LTD Eclipse with duncan pups(59/JB) for $559 and an Epi Gothic LP for $449. Any opinions on these?

Get a Gibson Studio used... the thinner body of an Eclipse makes it sound "weak" compared to a Gibson, and the Epiphone uses totally different materials, thereby achieving the exact same effect..

I have a Les Paul Studio. Best guitar I have ever owned though I never owned any other "High End" les paul. Although I have played the classics and Customs I don't here much of a difference.

Im with Zerb look online or in the paper for a used one you could get for around 600 or 700 dollars.

He's looked around for a good used one, but none have surfaced for his price limit. I suggested he wait till he doubles his cash for a LP Studio, but the money is burning a hole in his pocket.

Tell him to be patient if he does it will pay out in the end. I have bought other guitars and sold them or traded them nothing really compares to my Les Paul studio it will be around when I pass through this mortal coil.

I just drug my buddy down to GC to play a few LP's. He played a Fadded, Studio, and Classic. Needless to say he's gonna wait after playin the Studio and Classic. He's gonna sell his soul and some extra gear to one.

I bought a pristine 2 year old Les Paul Studio Limited Edition for $800 on eBay about a year ago or so. The deals are there, just tell him to be patient and wait it out.

I played an SL at guitar center on my last visit and I liked it, but I thought the new was a bit large and uncomfortable. I also played a faded SG which I like a tad more and then a Les Paul Standard in solid black finish. Of course I couldn't afford any of them and I'm not in the market at the moment, but it was fun anyway. For $700 bucks, I'd either get the SL (all depends on his tastes) or a used studio like Martin and Zerb and Harrison said.

Ask a guitar center what price they're selling the Goth LP for, it might be cheaper, the GC near me has the SG for 350 and V for 400.
    ESP Maverick (Blackouts Metal)
    Jackson Falcon (Invader)
    ESP LTD Ninja-600 (mirror) (Invader/Distortion)
    Schecter Syn Special (Invader set)

Those prices are for epiphones pretty big difference if you ask me. Definatley he should save his money for a Real genuine Les Paul Studio.

Check Ebay. I seen em go on this forum for around 650. There was a gorgeous wine red one on here awhile back. Man I wan't another one with the brushed chrome HD.

That's one of the many reasons I play real Gibsons. Tone being the first of course.
