Strats
Take a guess.
No doubt, SG's are a cool looking guitar but surely the strat has more to offer in pallette of sounds and potential for upgrading. You can upgrade strats to the nines and i would certainly not trade mine for an SG.

I like the look of SGs, but i don't like the uber-cutaway. It makes it feel like the neck is a mile long. I love the way strats play and sound.
Lew, I have to disagree with your idea about the strat having a wider palette of sounds. C'mon, you've heard an SG with P-90s. The tonal variety you can achieve is amazing, simply by playing with the tone knobs! It's like you have several guitars in one!Originally Posted by Alby

it's easy enough to get true humbucker sounds out of a strat (SC-sized humbucker) than it is to get true singlecoil sounds out of a HB-equipped SG

understood, but the arguement has been that a humbucker-laced SG doesn't have the versatility of a strat. Agreed. BUt I'm not talking about a humbucker'd SG. A P-90 is more versatile than a single coil, as it can get as fat as a bucker or as clean and glassy as a single.Originally Posted by Imp

SG. It's the only guitar that can sum up "stoner rock".
Current Guitars: LTD EC1000, Warmoth Custom Shop Tele w/SH8b and Fernandez Sustainer System, Fender 90's Precision Bass
Current Amp: Blackstar HT Studio 20->Ampeg 4x10
Current Effects Pedal: None
Current G.A.S: MXR Dyna Comp - The list just keeps changing!

Much agreed! The SG is a weapon. Wicked and dark, the SG end of the guitar universe is like the magic combination of high octane fuel in a high compression V8 engine..."slower burning", so you can squeeze it harder in the amp! The result? More Power!...especially at "part throttle" chunkOriginally Posted by V-Spot

Another analogy would be: "The Iron Fist, in the Velvet Glove!" Absolutely Punishing!
A Strat in my hands feels like a collection of screws and extra nonsense parts. I will never disparage the undeniable genius music of the guitar gods (Jerry Cantrell too!) that have used the Strat to make great music, but the Fender Strat just leaves me cold. I prefer Teles of the two common Fenders.

I like Gibsons, 2nd to that will be Fenders. I never had a Fender in my life, but the SG so far as much as I've tried is the one and only SG standard.
It doesn't really give me an outside-standing sound that I should invest in. Wht best part is that, its plugged into a JSX stack and I was blown away by other guitars such as Ibanez PGMs and Fender classic strats.
I would vote for a Strat, good strat that is
Gibson Songwriter Deluxe
Ibanez J Custom
Mesa "Electra Dyne" Boogie
Freedom through the blood of Christ

i'd prefer most any guitar to an SG
