I was recently thinking about buying another strat and putting a custom custom in the bridge posistion and putting a P-90 in the neck posistion. I was wondering how do you think this will sound and how come you often dont see strats with P-90's?

Kind of makes you wonder why they screwd it with the knob location.
Isn't it supposed to be honey-combed chambered? I can't see how...
One thing, Brian, are you talking about a regular ash or something like that strat or can it be of any material? I've seena few like the Stratosonic but I've never heard one. So it has to appeal to someone...

I was mainly thinking about buying a american standard strat and just getting rid of the singlecoils and putting in the humbucker and P-90. I was just wondering how it would sound and why we never really see and regular strat with p-90'sOriginally Posted by LSP

Inserts? Why?Originally Posted by big_black
One thing that might make it not a good match may be the wood/pup combo. Alder and ash are not usually paired with a p90 but hey, who knows. Some say a p90 is a sort of PAF with hum (not my opinion but then again I never tried a PAF for myself). A PAF is the father of HBs, some people like HBs in their strats, who knows, it might work out.
I'd search for something with alder or ash and a p90, if you like it, build it.

Ash sounds awesomw with P-90s. I had an ash bodied Axis with MM-90s.

What about Alder with P-90's?Originally Posted by big_black

Ummm....can't say. Adler is pretty neutral. It sound sound good.Originally Posted by Brian110687

I have a '51 with a p90 (gfs dream 90) in the bridge (basswood strat body, tele neck).
When I did this mod I had the "stratosonic" in mind, I figured it's a poor mans way of emulating what a stratosonic might sound like. I'd seen this model in the Fender catalog and was interested in it since it seemed to be kind of obscure and not talked about much.
It sounds real good, it's not as glassy as a strat, it's more like a tele but not quite the same bite, a bit smoother.
I've never played a stratosonic so I can't really compare the two, but this experiment was successful on its own merits.
It's definetely a "niche" sound, it's nice but I don't think it's as versatile as a strat, and I would choose the stock bucker in the '51 over this mod if I only had one '51. Since I had two, I modded one.
I have a bad, bad feelin, that my baby don't live here
no more, that's OK, I still got my gitar, look out now...........

see the "dirty harry". Reason I recommend these is only because Duncan doesn't offer anything like this.
"it is a really hard song. it has like 3 different power chords in it. i just learned what power chords are, i thought it was the thing from your amp that you plug in to the wall."

The problem with using real p-90's is that they are an odd size and you would need a new pickguard and to route the body. Although if the strat has a swimming pool route you could get a two humbucker pickguard and use a humbucker sized p-90. There's a lot of humbucker sized p-90's out there.
