What type of tone are you looking for? I find that the VHPAF does great `80s hard rock tones(Lynch,Lee,DeMartini)through my little rig and it cleans up really nice. It think it will do just about anything you want it to.

At least the pickup isn't quite so pricey....It's really a great pickup! I Played through it again tonight and I really like it alot....It's well worth the money I Payed, plus I waited 2 weeks to get it....Was worth the wait also...Really they did a nice job with this pickup and it sounds great in my SG...

Even with alot of gain, this pickup refuses to get muddy! It stays articulate and it cuts and grinds great when you push it,but at the same time it can be warm and round and pretty with the sense of space around the tone when you play clean...It's typical Dimarzio in a sense that it's not quite as round as some of the Duncan stuff but it also reminds me of the way the PGB acts when you push it....I'm keeping this pickup in this guitar, though I may put the nickel cover on it? Maybe?

Sorry I created G.A.S but I Like trying new things and after reading so many great reviews about this pickup,I Just had to have one....I'm glad I do now! It's right up there with some of the best bridge humbuckers I've tryed..

Dimarzio is spot on with the way they describe this pickup and the reviews I've read are pretty spot on also....

How hot is hot? Are we talking JB hot, or Screamin Demon hot? I might have to try a set in my 57RI, just to see.

I think it's only 'hot' in relation to the regular Virtual PAF. 9.13 dc vs. 8.32 Nothing like the JB, Dimebucker, etc. I've come to like lower output pups better than the hotter ones myself after having a majority of hot ones in the past.

Mainly blues and classic rock. I'm not into eighties metal.
Gibson LP Melody Maker -- stock, Epiphone Dot -- Jazz neck and '59 bridge, Fender Telecaster Blackout Deluxe -- stock, 90's MIM Standard Strat with Duncan Texas Hot Custom in the bridge.

BTW you did a great review, just wanted to read more of your thoughts on the VH-PAF vs FRED in terms of beef, output and harmonics.
I feel the two do have close to the same output...The VPAF Hot is warmer and rounder and has more lowend balls to my ears....The Fred coaxes easier harmonics and sustain and has slightly more mids and less lows...The Fred lacks that "airey" breathy thing that this VPAF has also and is a toppier pickup...Both are great pickups, but I Like the new one better in my SG compared to the Fred because it's rounder and fuller in tone.Something an SG benefits from in the bridge position anyway..And yes,the EQ seems different.

I have never played a FRED but I know that I can get tapped and pinched harmonics with my VHPAF in my Wolfgang Special. I don't think that you can get as many harmonics like Satch with the VHPaf, but you can get the Van Halenish harmonics with the VHPaf.

I had a VHPAF put in my sons PRS Santana SE for a christmas present(bridge). The kid won't stop raving about the huge difference. I think I did myself a favor because he plays mostly his own stuff and it sounds like he's gone from a metalish tone to a more classic crunch sound(thank goodness).

I've got a PAF Pro for the neck that I haven't got around to getting installed. He does like a little shredding to play around with so I think it will compliment the VHPAF.

I dont want spitt in your coffee, but DiMarzio announced a new pup for Satriani called Mo'Jo, which seem to fill the gap. More in the direction to VHPaf but better harmonics. This would probably a subitute for Fred and a complimant for Joe.

It's a bit too high on the output I think for my tastes and I know about both of Satch's new pickups.....

I'm going to now order a double creme VPAF Neck for this same guitar(My Gibson SG)and pull the 59 out....I really like the VPAF Hot I have in the bridge, plus I'd really love no cover double cremes in both positions now and I Know the VPAF will be a perfect compliment....

I'm ordering this next pickup from my friend Brian Calvert at Universal Jems this time though...Learned a lesson on the other one!

Should be but you might want to go with the VPAF Hot version? You'll get more mids and more lows from it...

I'm ordering the VPAF Neck over the next 2 days or so...
