    Default Warren Haynes tone

I know that Warren plays an LP most of the time but I have also read that he plays an SG for some Allman Bros tunes as well as all of the work he does with Phil Lesh. If anyone has heard his work with both Mule and Lesh, is his tone dramatically different or is he still getting that fat-ass tone no matter what the axe is?

While the SG may not sound as thick as an LP, just like discussed in the Clapton thread: No guitar (Not even a "thin" guitar like Strat or SG) is going to sound thin or bad in the hands of a player at that caliber.

I've seen a live vid of him playing the SG and he still had great tone. Don't worry so much about what guitar you're using. Focus on his playing to approximate his sound. Also, there's nothing wrong with SGs. Hell, they're good enough for Clapton, Angus Young, Derek Trucks. And IMO, all those guys have got great tone.

He's a strat player and a 335 player, firebird too and the guy always gets fat tone with great balls and sustain....He was using Marshalls,VHT.and SLO 100 amps....Not sure what he uses today...He likes PG pickups also...Great player and 1 of my favorites!

    Here you go!

"Well, it varies from the Allman Brothers to Gov’t Mule to Phil Lesh & Friends. The common denominator is that all the guitars are Gibsons. In the Allman Brothers. I use predominantly Les Pauls, and occasionally a 335. I have a ’61 dot neck 335 that I played throughout the entire new album, with the exception of two songs. In Gov’t Mule, I use a lot more variety of tone, so I’m using Les Pauls, Firebirds, 335s, and an Explorer. They all have that Gibson character, but they all sound different and all have a slightly different top end. In Phil Lesh & Friends, I use SGs and 335s, leaning more toward the SGs because in that band I want a smaller sound and a spikier tone that fits the sound of that band a little more.
Ampwise, the common ingredient for all of those situations is my César Diaz CD-100 which finds its way onto all three stages. In the Allman Brothers, I’m using my new 100 watt Marshall Super Lead Plexi reissue these days. In Phil & Friends, sometimes I use my Custom Audio Electronics head that was made by Bob Bradshaw, and sometimes a Fender Super Reverb. In Gov’t Mule, the additional head is my Soldano SLO-100 which I’ve used forever and ever. Sometimes I use a Gibson Goldtone GA-30RVS 2x12 amp that really sounds cool.
With Gov’t Mule and Phil Lesh, I use effects, but with the Allman Brothers, I don’t, and I just plug straight in. I have a Boss OC-2 Octaver, two-speed stereo tremolo made by Bob Bradshaw, César Diaz Texas Tone Ranger pedal, Centaur distortion, Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere Leslie simulator, Dunlop Crybaby wah, and Guyatone Funky Box envelope filter"

His Soldano SLO-100 are modded by Mikey S. himself. Hence `The Warren Hanyes mod' http://www.soldano.com/newsiteapril/html/faqs.html

Warren opened the Mule show in Tampa playing a non-reversed Firebird. I pretty much recall him playing a Les Paul all the way through the set when The Allman Brothers played the amphitheater here with Skynryd over the summer. The first time I saw Mule back in 97-98, he was using the Les Paul exclusively and the Soldano/Diaz rig.

I teched a couple shows for the Brothers in 2003 & Warren was using a Marshall reissue (can't remember if it was a 50 or 100) & the Diaz through a Marshall straight front cab & that PRS cab. Mics were four SM57's, two on each cab. Two Les Pauls & two 335's...some pedals mounted in a rack...not much to it at all really.

    That tone?

Just like Derek or Duane or any of them cats.

It's all in the hands. They could play a Strat through a Twin & it'll sound like them.

Here's a couple shots of Warren's tech bench on that 2003 stint.

    Dude...fingers...

    It's ALL in the fingers

I've run monitors & done other random bits with Derek, watched him unplug from a Super Reverb & plug into a tuner...then plug back into the Super all about two feet from my face.

Just an SG, cable, Super Reverb on about 7 or 8...with 'verb on 7 or 8.

No pixie dust...just real deal tone.
