Default anyone tried or have a modded mt-2 or ds-1?

anyone have one of those pedals ? im talking about the mt-2 modded by robert keeley and the ds-1 modded by doobtone.
im looking for a distortion pedal and i narrowed it down to those two.
i want something that can give me a tone like tool, a perfect circle, smashing pumpkins, afi, chevelle, finger eleven ect ect..

heres a link to a clip i made with my digitech that might better describe what im looking for ....... http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Me..._000018298.mp3
    (dont mind all the delay)

anyways, let me know your opinions on these pedals

I've tried both, and I think the Keeley MT-2 is what you're looking for...

Dude, why don't you hook up with STRATDELUXER97, John S., here at the forum? He mods DS-1's and SD-1's, among others. I've got one of each that John's modified and they sound far better than they did stock.
    Just a suggestion.

does the modded ds-1 have enough gain to play that clip ?

if so, i already hooked up with steve from doobtone for his mod
heres a link to reviews from his customers

    http://www.harmony-central.com/Effec..._1_Mod-01.html

i played a ds-1 in a music shop for the first time yesterday and i really like the organicness and warmth to it, i just thought it could use a tad more gain. so, yea, can the modded ds-1 hit the tone of that clip ?

If my suspitions are correct a keeley modded mt-2 would sound something close to a Recto in a box, maybe a tad smoother but you can't be shure. Once I can miss my mt-2 I'll send it over to keeley for a twilight mod.
I already did a puny mod to it after I talked to Keeley via e-mail, I changed out one of the clipping diodes for a led and changed the red indication led for a bright blue one. Pretty cool! But I'm not shure there is much difference in sound maybe a little more grit to it. I can't remember how it originally sounded.
I'll do some more mods after I can find a store near me that has the right caps in stock. (almost found one)

I've modded my own DS-1, only thing I did to it (because I actually like the sound of the MIT DS-1 maxed) is to increase the scoop response that you get with the tone in the middle, changed the diodes to allow the upper harmonics to clip assymetrically, tweaked the gain a bit , and some filtering... really more of a personal thing though, it does have less overall volume though, but I don't use it as a booster for clean gain, so that's not an issue for me.
As far as gain, the DS-1 is not really a super gain machine, and it doesn't sound as thick as some others (which I find good for rhythm) ... So that's a hard call there, I guess the best advice is to find something that *stock* is close to what you want, and then proceed from there to the work bench. A lot of the MT-2 character is just the effect of the EQ section upon all the harmonics. So you may want to audition pedals with there eq set as flat as possible clean or as clean as they can get, and then leave the tone there as you increase the distortion ... that way you are hearing the harmonics in a purer sense ... if you like it's overall character, but wish it had more gain, or clipped differently ... then that can be worked with; but if you don't like it to begin with, then you probably on't be able to do much with it as far as what you are looking for in tone.

There's alot of things you can do to the DS1 to bring it into another level actually...

I never had a gain problem with the DS-1. I thought it had lots! At one point I changed one of the resistors to get this scooped-metal sound, but it really wasn't for me. My biggest problem was volume and this really odd response that I've never felt with any other pedal...as if it didn't want to reproduce every note...

I know, no one has ever seconded that with me, but I swear it had a strange feel to it. Just me? Who knows....

Oh I agree John, to indicate the contrary wasn't what I was trying to say ... my point to him was that if he starts with something that's close to what he wants, then he has more to work with from the start. Plus I've heard horror stories from the newer DS-1s ... I don't know ... I had a MIJ one,and still have a MIT one, and they both sounded pretty good stock. I haven't tried the new off the line ones, so I couldn't compare. The DS-1 though isn't a gain monster though like the MT-2, hence my suggestion that if he wanted gain he might want to start with the MT-2 (plus all the extra eq control that's there) ... Maybe closer to what he wants, and therefore less intensive in the modding ... I guess I can clarifiy want I meant by the expression of... If you want a tweaked Marshall sound, it's a lot easier to get what you want by tweaking a Marshall, rather than redesigning a Fender to sound like a Marshall. That's all I meant ...

Don't know about your clip, but the DS-1 gain can be modded quite a bit, get with John on it...
