Default How Will ClassicStackPlus Sound in SERIES w/ PGn/CCb??

    Hi--

I installed a ClassicStackPlus-n in the middle (between a PGn and CCb) in my '77 tele.

Since I wired it in parallel with the other pickups, when I turn it on with one of them it cuts the volume in half --and-- I have to raise the mid (ClassicStackPlus) all the way to the strings to hear it's flavor.

So, I figure I should wire the ClassicStackPlus in SERIES with the other PUs to correct that problem. Artie says that the way I plan to do it will work, but he's not sure how it will sound. (The neck and bridge HBs are switched for full/split/parallel.)

Any thoughts on how it will sound in series, and/or whether it's a good idea, will be very much appreciated!

Any chance it's out of phase with your other pickups? It happened to me with a JB I combined it with and it did decrease the volume by about 1/2 and made the combination very thin and tinny. I suspect that's the problem because once I got them in phase the JB was loud and pround when combined with the Stack Plus.

In the case of the JB, I just loosened the baseplate and reversed the magnet to put it in phase with the Stack Plus pickups.

You could probably reverse the leads on the Stack Plus to get it in phase if it's out of phase.

Maybe you made an error wiring it up? Did you make green ground and black hot? That's how it should be.

    Hi Lew, thanks for responding--

I know that is not the problem because the current installation is on a DPDT center-off switch which gives me in-phase/OFF/out-of-phase (with N/B, whichever is selected). SO, in or out of phase ought to work, right? The out-of-phase position (on the ClassicStackPlus switch) is definitely "out-of-phase" sounding and is even quieter.

    What do you think???

You'll always have a big jump in mids between a vintage single and a mid heavy humbucker like a CC. You might want to resort to a Cool Rails, Duckbucker, lil 59, or something along those lines.

    Thanks Gearjoneser--

Are you suggesting those other PUs with or without the in-series wiring?

If the in-series setup for my ClassicStackPlus middle doesn't work out I'm thinking about the STK-S2 Hot Stack for a middle PU replacement. What do you think?
