Default Melody Maker got here today

Oh man I love it. It's got a ton of snap and crunch, easy to play, great feel, all the things I was hoping for. A lot closer to my old Jr. than an old SC Melody Maker which is fine by me. The Gibson P-90 sounds great so I'll hold off on the Vint/Ant swap for now. I did pull the ceramic cap and pop in an Orange Drop, same value .233. I measured the pots at 270k and 285k (mostly did it for Lew ) A single pup and 2 controls, God I love simplicity!
You use the vol/tone combo on this guitar to make a lot of tones so i msy pop on 500k pots at some point but I've run 300k with P90's for so long I am afraid it might be too bright, this thing sounds killer in the XXX and the Orange so I am good with it as is. It's getting a Jr. guard, gold knobs and Schaller Straplocks and it is done, whoohoo!!!

This sucker is just a rough and ready guitar waiting to be bloodied. I recommend cheap Gibsons to everyone, they open up something in your playing that just doesn't come out on fancier guitars.

The neck is a bit towards the 50's side but not a bat by any means, it's actually quite similar to my Standard or my old Jr. very comfortable. Hah clips for syre very soon for both the new additions, I've been playing early Aerosmith all night, killer first album tones between this and the Orange.

YF - Leslie West used Jr's back then though I wouldn't doubt he snuck a MM in the mix. This guitar is really a cross between the 2. The body thickness is right in between a Jr and Melody Maker, it has the MM headstock and button tuners and it has the input jack on the face like an MM. It has a dogear P-90 like a Jr. I don't think any MM ever had a P-90 out of the box. I guess this is why Gibson makes a big deal about calling these Les Paul Melody Makers instead of plain old MM's. It's really a fantastic guitar and they're cheap, even at the regular retail they're cheap.

Sweet and simple. I'd do something with the finish...it needs something, maybe some dark grain fill or a nitro and relic clear...it's too plain...for me, hehe

Yes, yes, yes new stuff does ROCK and I have been really lucky lately. I've got a very understanding wife, she is so cool about it. I am getting rid of several pieces of gear so it is a balancing act of sorts. I hate for stuff to sit unused, bad mojo, so a few good pieces are going to find a new home.

I used a Jr. as my main guitar for a few years until the neck was broken so badly it didn't pay to repair, shame it was a great guitar but would have needed a new neck so I bought my Special instead. I've been waiting a long time to replace that guitar and the right one finally showed up. I can't believe how good it plays and sounds. I've done nothing to it either, right out of the box factory setup, crazy that never happens. Plus I paid exactly what I paid for my Jr. It's a sign I tell you a sign

I do have a plan for kustomizing it a bit eventually but we'll see it's so good right now I just want to enjoy it.

    What would you like first

Biu - the finish is feels fine, what looks a bit rough in the pic is hardly noticeable to the touch. It is open grain but fairly smooth because of the finish. The look is alright I would actually have preferred a faded/worn look, it fits better with the open satin finsh I think. I imagine it'll get reliced on it's own pretty quickly, it is going to get a lot of playing time I am sure.

The guitar was basically brand new, the guy I got it from got it as part of Gibson promo and didn't want it, if it was used at all it was minimal.

I've been looking at them for a while and I found most of them to be about the same, solid but rough fret edges and in need of a quick fret polish. I've played at least 20 of them and they were all within spitting distance of each other, I actually was surprised at how consisten they were. This one may have been setup because it was dead on but otherwise no different than the others I have played.

It is a one piece body and it appears to be a one piece neck as well. I was pleased about that because I never thought to look at the others I have played to see if that was the case. I know the Faded Specials are 2 or 3 piece bodies and I guess I just kind of assumed that the MM's were too.

I've got one of the small Orange combos, the AD15/12. Smokin' little amp.

Nice! I bet you can get some nice open G stuff going with that through the Orange.
