IMHO, this Liar/Steroid user/Dirtbag should be thrown out of the game before he has the chance to tie the home run record of a true legend like Babe Ruth.![]()

I hate him and always have. He's a prick. I hope he blows both his knees out.

I went to the game the other night hoping to catch history.
He didn't play.
I kinda hope he hits the tying HR, but as he's rounding the bases, has a steriod induced heart attack or aneurism before crossing home plate. Thus making it not count in the rulebook while giving the youth a hearty message.Originally Posted by JOLLY

Wow people--nice personal attacks. I know everyone wants to hate Barry because he's a "cheater" and he's a jerk and he killed Santa Claus. But unless you want to be total hypocrites, keep these things in mind:
If you're going to condemn cheaters, condemn them ALL. Babe Ruth got busted for corking his bat (fact--look it up).
Mickey Mantle took speed most of his career.
Gaylord Perry threw spitballs his whole career.
Do you hate all of them too? Are their records meaningless? Did they "disgrace the game"? Should they not be allowed in the hall?
Hate Barry all you want for his lack of social skills but he's the best I've ever seen ever. The sweetest swing, the best power/speed combination of all time, and a stat line that--juice or no juice--is up there with Ted Williams, Lou Gherig, Babe Ruth, and Willie Mays.
a) In 1923 early in the season Ruth did use the "Crawford Bat" which was not a corked bat but was a laminated bat. This bat was used by a number of hitters and was not illegal at that time.Originally Posted by Matt Blackett
Ruth and all others who used it were told by the commissioner they could no longer use that type of bat.
Source New York Times archives.
b) Mickey Mantle prolly need the speed to counter act the fact that he was drunk off his ass most of the time. & I can't help but admire that.
c) what do u expect from a guy named Gaylord.
d) I did not attack Bond's person. I just stated that I hope he drops dead.
& Ken Griffey Jr has the sweetest swing of all tyme!
Not true. Ruth did use a laminated bat, but he also got busted (and suspended) for corking.Originally Posted by seafoamer
Don't take my word for it. Here's what Bill James has to say:
In 1983, a group of Seattle Mariners were admiring one of Babe Ruth's bats until Dave Henderson, according to Dan Gutman (It Ain't Cheating If You Don't Get Caught), spotted something amiss: the round end of the bat did not match the barrel's wood. The end also had a crack the rest of the bat didn't. "That's a plug!" Henderson hollered. "This bat is corked."
As a matter of fact, the Sultan was a real corker: he was in fact the half-inspiration for then-American League president Ban Johnson imposing a policy outlawing "trick bats" in 1923 ... after Ruth was found using a bat made of four pieces of wood glued together.
"As I see it, wrote Bill James, in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, "nothing could be more typical of Ruth than to use a corked bat if he could get by with it. Ruth tested the limits of the rules constantly; this was what made him who he was. He refused to be ordinary; he refused to accept that the rules applied to him, until it was clear that they did. Constantly testing the limits of the rules, as I see him, was Babe Ruth's defining characteristic."
I love your line "This bat was used by a number of hitters and was not illegal at that time." So is it OK so long as it's not illegal at the time?
I love Babe Ruth and I consider him the best player ever. But come on--he never had to face a black or Dominican pitcher, never had to play a night game, never had to fly to the West Coast, and benefitted hugely from a juiced ball in the "Lively Ball Era." Wouldn't you call all those things "unfair advantages"?

Babe Ruth won 20 games as a pitcher and stole home. Bonds is a POS and I truly hope he has a career ending injury before he can pass Ruth. Bonds is a perfect example of what is wrong with baseball. He is dirty and an SOB which is why everyone hates him.
Just to reiterate, I love Babe Ruth. But please--let's not compare his base-stealing prowess to Barry, who, I will remind you, is the only member of the 400/400 club, the only member of the 500/500 club and the only member of the 500/700 club. He won three MVPs when he was skinny and is simply the best player of the past 25 years. A-Rod and Pujols are awesome, but let's check back in 15 years.Originally Posted by RGN
By the way, ask A-Rod and Pujols who the best player they ever saw was.
Any guesses who they name without hesitation?
